Ok I have a kirbin shifter that has been working find for months now…….But recently it is making a rattling noise under hard acceleration. I think it might be the little rubber nubbin at the end of the shifter. Anyone else experience this? If so where did you get the part to fix it?
Re: Kirbin shifter rattle under hard acceleration (TooManyIDs)
Yeah that was my thought as well. But when I got to the bolts they are fine. I still gave them a little more just to see but still no change. I haven't removed the shifter yet but I though I read something about this and someone have a replacement part for the little nubbin that goes at the end of the shifter. I guess I will have to pull it and find out.
PS i checked wit the dealer and they don’t have that part but they would love to sell me the whole shifter for like 300 bucks!!!!!
Re: Kirbin shifter rattle under hard acceleration (Black2KVett)
I put a Kiban shifter in my 02 a week after I got in last September and it also rattles sometime under acceleration. I double checked the mounting bolts and shifter stops and everything is fine. I don't know what is causing it bit it ticks me off because it shouldn't do this.
Re: Kirbin shifter rattle under hard acceleration (Black2KVett)
Not sure what nubbin you mean, but my Kirban rattled like crazy for the first two weeks I had it. Had on the Momo phantom ****...then I bought the Kirban silver ball with the 6 speed pattern. No more rattling/vibration. The Kirban ball is significantly heavier than the momo, and because of the materials, you can tighten it down a lot more. Whatever the recipe, it cured the rattle.
Re: Kirbin shifter rattle under hard acceleration (Black2KVett)
For what it is worth, I installed a Hurst shifter 3 weeks ago. First couple of days everything was great. Starting the next week I began getting a slight rattle when accelerating hard. I began checking things out and one day I held the shift ****. That's where my rattle is coming from. I reinstalled the stock shifter ****, set the metal PIA key but the **** still rattles on hard acceleration. I think it's because the aftermarket shifters are much tighter than the OEM and as a result transmits more vibration causing the stock shift **** to rattle. I live with it as I have not see nan aftermarket **** that I like yet.
Re: Kirbin shifter rattle under hard acceleration (jeanlucpicard)
I'm fighting this problem with my Hurst. So far, I've tried all the usual fixes except a different ****, as I prefer the stock ****. Wheel weights, stop bolts in and out, tighten ****, lotsa grease on the nylon bushing (that works some....use thick, sticky, stringy axle grease, not wimpy white grease).
Interestingly, my Kirban didn't rattle at all after 2 years of daily use.
Re: Kirbin shifter rattle under hard acceleration (tracy)
A solid metal ****, I used the RK Sport one but I would not think that it would matter, took care of this for me. Any hollow ****, such as the Momo, is going to buzz.
Re: Kirbin shifter rattle under hard acceleration (George Cooper)
As George said, a heavy, solid ball is good move. I was actually thinking about how nice it would be to have a solid lead ****, covered in leather so as not to poison us.
Re: Kirbin shifter rattle under hard acceleration (rschiltz)
My tinkering for the last two evenings has rendered my Hurst silent, EXCEPT when the stock **** is screwed on.
No doubt about it, the stock **** has a buzz. And I've tightened it down to where I thought for sure I was going to twist the leather off or strip the threads. Now I'm going to tinker with it some more and see what happens. The shift pattern insert piece is highly suspicious at this point.
But I might be ordering a big 'ol aluminum **** on Monday....
(Also--I was told the delrin Hardbar **** rattles, too, as hard as that is to believe!!)
Re: Kirbin shifter rattle under hard acceleration (Black2KVett)
When using the stock ****, make sure the metal wedge in the middle is WELL
hammered in. I've read in a couple of other threads how that has cured rattles
on all 3 aftermarket shifters. (And, yes, I have a rattle-free Kirban with the
stock ****).
Re: Kirbin shifter rattle under hard acceleration (TooManyIDs)
I turned the **** one more rotation and that made a big reduction in sound. Not totally quiet, but better.
I pulled the plastic cap (has the shift pattern) off the stock **** and all was quiet. I'll try some felt between it and the base of the **** to see if that will take care of things.
