I just ordered a Blackwing, and have been looking at the stock air box. With this new filter do I need to worry about water hurting the engine since it is not sealed up like the stocker? Advice please.
You'll be fine, the Blackwing is on the other side of the shroud. Unlike other open air systems which you cut a hole in the shroud to get fresh air. :D
Maybe he's talking about water getting in through the top of the car. With the stock unit, there is a plastic covering over the filter so no water gets in around the hood or when opening the car during rain. The Blackwing is so large it won't fit under that covering...as if you would want to leave the covering on anyway...so that would make the Blackwing kind of susceptible to water leakage.
I made a hood seal from weather stripping (about 3/8" thick by x 3/4" wide) and it works great---and I don't worry about any water leakage into the engine bay when washing, etc. I also had some mag red paint left over from an earlier repair and painted the weather stripping and it looks great.
As mentioned above, it doesn't have the water worries of the Vortex, etc.
Thank you guys that really puts my mind at ease. If you have any pics on how you made the weather striping work i would like to see it, so I could repeat it on my car.

You shouldn't worry at all. I've been running a halltech bottom breather for over 2 years now in the new england climate (winters as well) without any kind of issue. I swear we get as much rain as Seattle sometimes. You have no greater risk for hydrolock with an aftermarket system than with the stock system, it happens to all the intakes. If it actually does happen to you, immediately run out and buy a bunch of lottery tickets because you have incredible luck, albeit bad luck ;) .

Re: Air filter Concerns (coop19)
If the Blackwing gets a little water on it (like from washing the car) it won't hurt anything. I don't think you are going to get enough water on it under normal circumstances to even get a few spots on it. One has to totally submerge the filter with the engine running to hydrolock the car.
The weatherstrip won't hurt a thing, but is optional. I have the Blackwing and no strip and I've been just fine, even in the rain.
