My car is a 97 A4 and today it started cutting out when getting on the gas at a slow speed or from stop. But if I cut the traction control off it runs fine . Don't understand what is going on. It is a little cold here about 35° wouldn't think that matters. Any ideas ??

The "diagnostic display" mode is entered with the following procedure:
1) Turn on the ignition but don't start the engine.
2) Press the "reset" button to turn off any warning messages
3) Press and hold "options"
4) While holding "options", press "fuel" four times within a 10-second period.
When first engaged the on-board diagnostics go into an "automatic" mode which shows all parameters: PCM-TCS-RTD-BCM-IPC-radio-HVAC-LDCM-RDCM-SCM-RFA. If there are no problems, you will see "no more codes" on the ICP display.
The computer will show two kinds of codes, "current" and "history," designated "C" or "H". A current code indicates a malfunction is present in the system whose module is displaying data. A history code indicates a past problem.
When the screen displays "manual diagnostics," select the desired module by pressing the "options" button to go forward or the "trip" button to go back. Press "gages" to go forward or "fuel" to go back.

PS: When this happens does the DIC indicate TRACTION SYS ACTIVE?
No, nothing comes on .Checked the codes today , found nothing current Did find P1571 in the history , And also found out my cruise control had stop working if that matters.

DTC P1571 Traction Control Torque Request Circuit
Circuit Description
The PCM supplies 5 volts on the desired torque circuit to the Electronic Brake and Traction Control Module (EBTCM). The EBTCM toggles this 5 volt signal to a ground in order to produce a duty cycle signal. The signal is proportional to the amount of engine output torque reduction requested by the EBTCM. The EBTCM supplies this signal when it detects a wheel slip. In order to reduce engine output torque, the PCM reduces the amount of spark advance and in some cases, the PCM disables a number of fuel injectors. This diagnostic tests for a Desired Torque signal failure. If the PCM does not receive the Desired torque signal, this DTC sets.
Conditions for Running the DTC
• The traction control has not failed.
• The engine speed is greater than 500 RPM for 20 seconds.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
The desired torque signal is not received by the PCM for 3 seconds.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
• The powertrain control module (PCM) stores the DTC information into memory when the diagnostic runs and fails.
• The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) will not illuminate.
• The PCM records the operating conditions at the time the diagnostic fails. The PCM stores this information in the Failure Records.
Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC
• A last test failed, or the current DTC, clears when the diagnostic runs and does not fail.
• A history DTC clears after 40 consecutive warm-up cycles, if failures are not reported by this or any other emission related diagnostic.
• Use a scan tool in order to clear the MIL/DTC.
Diagnostic Aids
Important:
• Remove any debris from the PCM\TAC module connector surfaces before servicing the PCM\TAC module. Inspect the PCM\TAC module connector gaskets when diagnosing/replacing the modules. Ensure that the gaskets are installed correctly. The gaskets prevent contaminate intrusion into the PCM\TAC modules.
• For any test that requires probing the PCM or a component harness connector, use the Connector Test Adapter Kit J 35616 . Using this kit prevents damage to the harness/component terminals. Refer to Using Connector Test Adapters in Wiring Systems.
• Do not perform this diagnostic procedure if the customer's concern is not related to the ABS and/or the Traction Control system(s).
• The following may cause an intermittent:
- Poor connections; Refer to Intermittents and Poor Connections Diagnosis in Wiring Systems.
- Corrosion
- Mis-routed harness
- Rubbed through wire insulation
- Broken wire inside the insulation
• For an intermittent condition, refer to Symptoms .
P0719 is brake switch circuit low input. Would that be tied into the P1571 Traction Control Torque Request Circuit? Like I said the car does fine with the traction control off.Will it be OK to drive until I figure this out? Don't really know where to start looking. Thanks for all and any help.

Last summer my 01 coupe was acting like this. However when this happened the service traction control and active handling would come up on the info center. I had the P1571 code but there were 2 other codes sorry I don't remember what they were. I checked all of my grounds and wiring. What I finally found the root cause to be was moisture in the TAC module harness connections. Where the harness plugs into the TAC module. The easiest way to get to this is pull the right front tire, and remove the inspection cover at the rear of the wheel well. The TAC module is the small black box bolted to the front of the main ECM. As soon as I dried the connections and cleared the codes they have never returned. Make sure the seals on the connectors are in good shape. Doesn't hurt to put a little die electric grease on the seals when connecting the harness. Just on the seals not in the connector. I am by no means a wiring or electrical expert but this is what I found to be the problem on mine. Work through it one step at a time search the forum there is a world of information here. Please don't start throwing parts at the problem. Find the root cause and repair it.

So your car would be fine with the TC cut off ? And have reduced power with the TC on ? Sorry if I'm asking to many questions, just trying to find someone who's car was acting just like mine.

I guess I didn't try running it with the T/C off. I know as long as I cleared the codes and eased into the throttle and kept the RPM under 2000 the car would drive without throwing the codes and go into the reduced power mode. I drove it like that from Estes Park home. If I got on the throttle or went over 2000 RPM the codes set, went into reduced power. Idled terrible and at times would die at idle, very little to no throttle response.
Sorry didn't try it with traction control active handling off. Should have thought of that would have made for a better drive home.
OK, looked in the FSM on P0719. It is not related to TC at all.
I would start by replacing the brake switch. The contacts should be closed until you press the brakes. When they open the PCM loses it's input and deactivates the Torque Converter Clutch solenoid. You could also test the switch to see if it is that or a circuit issue else where. If you need the schematic I can post that too.
I see no danger in driving the car, just don't do it in heavy traffic.

After looking back in my notes these are the other codes that were active along with the P1571. P1220, P1221, P1516, and C1278.
