Driver's Window Glass getting scratched on outside, HELP!
My '00 FRC's drivers side window is collecting a bunch of scratches on the outer side. I've looked in my shop manual with no luck; I assume there's some adjustment that I can make to keep it from getting scratched, or there's some pad that's gotten contaminated that needs to be replaced, or ??

Not knowing what the scratches look like, it's hard to say, but the scratching is most likely from some component related to the window lift mechanism that is not adjusted properly. It is most likely a strut of some kind that needs to be re-positioned. I think it is not sand. Sand would have fallen away to the bottom of the door long ago.
You can try it yourself if you are mechanically inclined, but it may be very frustrating. A dealer can do it of course. A GM door is a GM door. GM did not re-invent all the clips and fasteners and door and window lift mechanisms just for the Corvette. Also, a good body guy can do it - they have to take apart doors and put them back together all the time.

I had the same problem on my passenger side. Vertical scratches from the window going up and down. My window was replaced under warranty, and my tech told me that there was an adjustment to the angle of the window that was out of whack. The window was scraping against something in the door (window motor?). I don't know if this is the same scratching you have, but if your car is under warranty, I would take it in.

I've had two C-5s, a 98 Coupe and a 99 Hardtop and they both developed vertical scratches on the driver's side window. I think it probably comes from road grit trapped between the seal and the window. I probably shouldn't but I just sort of accept it. Mine is driven daily in all kinds of weather and conditions. :yesnod:

Thanks for the comments. Looks like I'm going to be looking inside the door to see if that felt is contaminated. I'm sure the scratches are too deep to attempt to polish out, but I'd like to eliminate any further damage.
Thanks for the comments, and have a good one,
Mike

I had vertical scratches appear on the driver's window. As I watch the window lower, the vertical scratch remains in the exact same spot relative to the door. It was replaced under warrenty and shortly thereafter the scratches appeared again. Time to get it fixed again.

I love this place. This same thing is happening on my 2002 coupe. Off to the dealer I go for a new Window! I figured no way in Hell that they would cover this. I suppose I'm wrong!
WOW! I thought I was the only one that had quarky things like that happen. I too have several vertical scratches on my driver's side window. Pretty crappy looking :U Unfortunately, since it's a '97, its not under warranty. $262 to replace the side glass plus getting it re-tinted. But I don't want to replace it until I know what caused it in the first place.

I hope they don't give me a problem like the rotor warp problem. They would only lath mine. I went the baer route so it doesn't happen again. I sure am going to print this out because I'm just waiting for the it's not covered routine. Ofcourse, every dealer is different!
I bought a glass polishing kit from Mid-America but I'm afraid to use it. It says specifically not to use it on tinted windows. They're not talking about the film tint you put on the inside of the window  but about the tint these windows already have. I might try it anyway. Most of the scratches I have are too deep to get out with any amount of polishing but maybe I can make it a little less noticable.

Hi all,
It sounds like it is definitely something in the inside door body/window lift motor area scratching the window. If it were sand or similar, it would roll around and not be in the EXACT same area every time up/down. I had a similar problem and opened up my door panel and zip-tied back all cables/wires and made sure the screws were all tight. It isn't that difficult to remove the panel, just tedious. Go slow and use light pressure. There should be a post on removing the door panels somewhere in here.
