Detonation means you're running lean; typically it's from bad gas (watered down, lower octane than advertised, etc) so if the problem just started, try and wait until you're down to about 1/8-1/16 tank before refilling (at a different station) and hopefully it'll take care of itself.
I developed pinging in my '01 coupe fairly early on -- I think it was in the 5-10k mile range. I changed my PCV system, and the problem immediately went away. The change I went with can be found here: http://www.fbody.com/members/stevenm...ML/pcv_mod.htm. Basically, it sets up a more restrictive flow in the PCV system and adds in-line filters. The theory is that the stock PCV system in some LS1s is permitting too much oil vapor, and possibly liquid, to get back into your intake. Anyhow, if you read the site, you'll see the author did comparos of before and after and also returned back to before to see how it affected pinging, and he found considerable improvement with the mod. I had the same success.
More recently, I took my car in for oil consumption. The Chevy service test first replaced my PCV valve (I had returned my system to stock prior to bringing the car in). With the new valve, I did not notice any pinging for about 600-700 miles, but after that the pinging has returned. :mad
