I did steves mod on my 2000. The filter did catch some oil.

I think a better solution would be to use an electric motor to vacuum the crank case into a catch can and bypass the throttle body all together.

I put a GReddy oil tank on my '99 ($89). Mounted the can on the right frame rail forward of the radiator shroud. So far, the clear plastic line from the PCV valve is WELL stained with oil, and this is after only 50 miles  Good news is the line back to the TB is clean. Can't judge whether the pinging stopped yet, as it is in the 70s here in Dallas today!

If you do this mod, note that the supplied hose collapses under the combined heat under the hood and the vacuum draw from the intake, so you have to go buy a 5/8"x1/4" section of hose ($5 for 10' at Home Despot). I was originally worried about the total length of the hoses (a little over 5' when complete, full circle) but there is plenty of draw from the hose.

I'll post install pics later.

I seen your posts on LS1 tech so I gave your idea a shot, picked up the 50 micron one from pep boys. When I swapped intakes yesterday I couldnt believe how much oil was in there and in the ports. After driving it pretty hard for only a few hours there is already some oil the little cup. It doesnt seem to drop the vacuum as much as Steve's mod did. Time will tell how well it works but I put one of those see through gas filters without the element inline to the TB (had one laying around) and there is no oil in it yet. I may try the greddy can eventually but we'll see how this works..

Heya. I've been too lazy to test the vacuum, but I'm sure it's better and improved over the SMH setup. I asked my mech how often I should change this type of filter and he said it should last almost forever, however long that is. ;)

I'm surprised that I've only collected maybe 1 teaspoon so far. It picks up oil over time, but it isn't really filling up quickly.. Makes me wonder if it's working 100%..? Haven't noticed any drop in oil pressure. I should probably check to see if it's restricing now that it is oil logged.

I'm still burning oil like the typical LS1, but am happy not to be injesting it into my intake and combustion. The rest must burn up or blow by the rings.

This is true.
Some have reversed their stock Air Pump to provide vacuum.
U want to try? Let us know!

I wondered about those 1/4 inch gas filters on Steves set up, seems to me once oil gets in the paper filter it will clog it up and not allow any flow. Where do you pick up one of those filters, looks kind of like a water separator we have on the jet skis. Thanks for all the good ideas! :yesnod:

I went out to check mine after the car cooled off and it looks like there is about 1/4 a teaspoon in there already. I was really beating the crap out of it though. When I pulled the intake it was almost dripping oil and there had to be 1/16" inch of oily crud in the intake ports wherever the fuel injector spray didnt touch. My other two LS1 cars I bought new and they both would get oil in the intake but its amazing how gunked up this thing was after 76k miles.

The weird thing is, after that first 1/4 tsp, I don't get that much more in there?

I got my filter at AutoZone. You want the manual drain type.

Did you check the suction at the trottle body to make sure it wasn't clogged ?
