Yesterday I installed a MGW shifter. Because now it has a "notchy" feeling it was suggested to install the washer in the transmission to fix the problem. I searched for an answer but could not find it as to why one thin washer makes a difference. Can anyone answer that?

The washer moves the detent bolt out and reduces pressure on the spring... and suppose to make the shifting less notchy... some say it help others see no difference. Some have used two or three washers and then report of a "sloppy" wore out shifter feel... I guess it's just trial and error it's a pretty simple job so it is easily undone if you don't like the results.

The detent plug creates an additional pressure which must be overcome by the shifter in order to change gears. The result of this added pressure is a magnifying of the natural notchiness a rod actuated shifter lever normally encounters, so backing off the detent plug a bit reduces that feeling. The plug itself is capped with a spring loaded ball bearing, so small changes in its thread depth create large changes in its preload.
