Default C5 Z06 Windshield Replacement (Leaks)

Hey guys,

I have had the unfortunate experience of having my windshield replaced in my 03 Z06. Let me elaborate just a little on this. I had the windshield replaced by SafeLite who assured me that they would use new moldings and the Z06 specific windshield along with sending their most experienced technician.

I simply wanted the windshield replaced with the 4.8 mm OEM windshield. I stressed this point to them along with the insurance company and they agreed to allow an OEM windshield from the dealer to be installed. The guy arrives and I take a look at the windshield, which is indeed a HUD C5 windshield which lacks the GM logo or the 4.8 mm designation. I questioned the tech on this and he said this is what the dealer sent out based on my VIN and they no longer produce the Z06 or hardtop specific windshield. No GM logo, just AP solar Ray? Is there any truth to this?

Also, the windshield they installed had two relatively deep scratches that the tech assured me that they could buff out. He also did a great job of cutting into and damaging both of my interior A-pillar moldings. He also cracked both of the plastic shadow valence moldings that run along the outside door trim. He left old screws inside of the car and basically left behind a mess. I waited a few hours and tested the car for leaks (car never leaked before) and low and behold both doors now pour in water near the mirrors.

So he came out again to fix the leak from the initial visit and basically just put urethane wherever he could in order to get a good seal around the door. Needless to say, I still have leaks that are far worse than the initial leak. He attempted to pull the preexisting condition argument regarding the damages and the shadow valence molding crack (which is why my car is now leaking). The car never had those damages. Keep in mind that he did complete a pre-inspection and showed me two issues with the windshield wiper cover before he removed it. I was never notified of anything else nor did I sign anything acknowledging damages before he commenced work.

I get my insurance company involved and they get me in touch with the local hub manager who wanted photos. He was very understanding of my issues and offered to order new pieces if necessary. I took the car in to the local hub to get the scratches buffed out, but also to show him in person the damages caused by his technician. Long story short, he is making it right by replacing all the pieces in question and taking care of the windshield scratches. I don't really want to be that guy that nit picks, but my tech really dropped the ball on my car. The Z06 is my daily so I am forced to drive my other garage queen for the next 5-10 days due to the delay in the parts coming in ( not to happy about this).

Enough of my rant Do you guys know anything about sourcing the Z06 windshield and the lack of GM branding on the one installed in mine? Also, they do not want to replace the thick rubber molding that runs along both door windows, as they say it can safely be reused. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks in advance!

going through the same thing now....safelite guy was at the house, said all the molding needed to be replaced and that i should bring the car to their shop so they can leak test it etc etc. I was leaving on a business trip on a Monday, parts where due on Thursday. I dropped the car off on that Monday so it would be ready when i returned. I land from my trip and have a message from satellite saying my car is done. I call and the manager and area supervisor apparently wanted to knock it out. Said that all the trim was fine and not needed. So i asked him if it was leaking, he said no. I get home sit in the car and have the old lady spay the hose on the windshield and water pours in from the sides up under the dash and down my speakers. FML!!!!! do all people suck at their professions anymore?

I am also going through the same thing with safelite on my 01 Z. I just printed all of this out. I had my windshield replaced about the time you posted this. Unfortunately for me work 70+ hours a week I was unable to notice a leak (since it started raining when my windshield was being replaced). Anyway today safelite just today denied any wrong doing and blamed my side trim which they removed and reinstalled as the problem area. My insurance company is going to investigate it on Tuesday. What happened to your dealings?

this is really shocking. I thank you guys for stepping up to warn about this.
What alternatives are out there for windshield installs on our C5s?

Sorry for the large pictures, computer is acting up.

Both plastic drip rails are now broken

The drivers side window channel is all bent up (see the missing paint?)

Second picture: Look at the A pillar trim the gap is so large you can see the mirror

Man, what a mess. Me, I force the Insurance Co to buy a new windshield someplace else.

Could this new windshield glass be one of those cheap China imports?

I have a '56 Coupe and I read about the same problems with glass always seems to be from China..

I had one replaced on my C4 Convert and installed, at the Chevy Dealer They scratched the glass, buffed it out - didn't tell me..

I drove around the block and took the C4 straight back to the Dealer. It was like looking though a poor set of Bi-focal glasses.

I went straight to the General Manager, and told him what happened. He walked out into the lot, looked at the glass from inside the car. He didn't day a word, just walked of. He came back and sort of smiled at me then swung a large hammer into the windshield and simple said.

"We'll have this replaced Properly". I was very surprised. Didn't like to glass inside the car. But He made it good and the Car was spotless.

good luck...

The bad thing is my insurance company only uses this company. As soon as I tell them I need a windshield they transfer me. Yes I can go anywhere and get reimbursed by my insurance. They did a great job on my on another car and my truck, even repaired a leak that had been there for 6 years. I guess the guy with 20+ years experience didn't know how to do a C5. Next time it will go to the dealer. An insurance adjuster is going to look at the damage today.

I am leaving these instructions with the car, in-case the adjuster doesn't know either: http://www.abbeyroweautoglass.com/20...d-replacement/
