I just bought a 97 Corvette and it only came with one set of keys and 1 keyless remote. I am in the process of buying a used keyless remote. Can anyone tell me how to program it so that I don't have to pay a dealer. Also, Is there any way to find out what key code that my car is so that I can order one from someone other than a dealer? My owners manual does not have the code in it.
Turn the key to ON and don't start the car. Press the Options button and cycle through the choices untill a blank screen comes up. Hold the Reset button down until FOB TRAINING appears. Press and hold down the lock and unlock buttons at the same time until the screen indicates it's ready to do the next fob. You can do up to three.
To find out the key code, go to the dealer's parts department and they can "read" the key. While you're there, ask them whom they recommend to cut the key. In my own experience, I found that the price of the blank at the locksmiths was no better than at the dealer and they were out of the blank I needed and I ended up ordering it from the dealer anyway. As the blank costs around $40, I was told that while they haven’t cut a code key that didn’t work there was no way they would guarantee that it would.
Bill, thanks for the information. Ecklers sells the cut keys for $14.99 but you have to have the correct code (15 of them) I don't know if a dealer will just read mine and tell me. I guess I can try.
You'll need more than just the VATS code for Ecklers to cut you r key. You'll also need your vehicle's key number as well. This number is embossed on a metal tab attached to the key ring in your owners packet. It is also printed on the dealer invoice for the vehicle under the heading, "KEYS:" Usually the numbers are 5 characters in length, such as "X357C", for example. In addition to that , you then need the VATS (Vehicle Anti-Theft System) letter identification of your particular key blank. Such as "XY", for example. This last item is what the dealer can "read" for you by inserting your key into their machine.
