We've been discussing the rattling of Hurst (and Kirban and Ripper) shifter for the past several weeks. I managed to quiet down my *second* Hurst (they replaced the first one) with the usual tricks (back off stop bolts, lead weights, etc.). The shifter itself was quiet as an oyster, but when I put the stock **** on.......bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
So, after careful consideration of the MOMO ***** and all the others out there, I decided to go with the MGW "Gripper" piece. You can see it at mgwltd.com
S I L E N C E. Finally. This is a very fine ****, beautifully made. It screws wwaaayyyy down on the shaft, and locks in place with a strong setscrew. I choose the grey anodize, and it looks good and understated (and the finish matches Z06 wheels exactly, FWIW). The "leather" wrapping, which is acutally the same as that synthetic stuff that gets molded to motorcycle handlebars, is very nice and 'grippy'. The ball is not big....but just right for the hand. Heat transfer from the driveline tunnel is what could be expected, warm but not hot to the touch, and the wrapping allows you to shift without having to really grab the aluminum, should the **** be hot from sitting in a closed car on a killer hot day after you've driven it.
Anway, I give the MGW Gripper **** a 10. But...they warn you....it won't stop the rattling in a shifter that has a problem, but it won't contribute to the problem, either. Isn't it bizzare that the stock **** (whci I would have preferred to use, acutally) can vibrate at the threads?
Tracy - Same story here. I just installed the MGW Gripper (triple chrome plated) to match my chrome Z06 wheels and all the rattles and buzzing have stopped. As a bonus since this **** screws down even further than the OEM or momo I had it's even lower. The throws are precise but not overly stiff. The Hurst now performs like I expected it to in the first place.
All I can figure is there must have been some natural harmonic vibration with the OEM and momo *****. Probably just enough difference in the mass of the two ***** to change the frequency of the vibration.
In any event the MGW (for $45) is a fantastic piece. Since it screws down about 3/4 of an inch lower than the OEM I would hope folks with the OEM shifter would give it a try. It may make the OEM more enjoyable for little $$$
Tracy, the reason the stock **** os soooo noisy is simple...
The top of the stock **** is hollow. Therefore allowing the end of the solid metal shift rod to be exposed. The only thing on top of it is a plastic cap.
The whole thing acts like a mechanics stethescope. It transmits all the tranny noises right up to the plastic cap that acts like a frigging speaker. :D
I found this out by putting my palm over the cap and everything went silent..
I have since pulled the cap off and filled it with silicone bathtub sealant. That does a great job of silencing the dreaded stock ****. :smash: :smash:
chuckster--my **** rattled with the shift pattern insert piece was in my garage and my car was 20 miles away! :D And this is with and without the T-pin. I have tried ALL the tricks to quiet the stock ****..teflon tape, silicone, screwing down ultra tight, etc etc etc. The damn thing even buzzed when I had my hand on it. Hell, I drive with my hand on the shifter anyway, so you'd think that would solve the problem. As AFVETTE mentioned, the Hurst likely transmits a vibe at the natural frequency of the ****, and there's no way to dampen it. The Kirban in my 2000 buzzed the **** a little bit at a narrow rpm band, so I could live with it.
The MGW solved the problem on the Hurst.
I have held and played with their other ****, the cylindrical one that zpoz06 shows, and it's also beautifully made, but I prefer the ball style for "palm of hand" shifting.
My post is not a knock on any of the MOMO *****....I love the styling of the Combat/Phantom/F16 *****. But I've heard reports of some of them buzzing like a cicada, and I didn't want to take a chance.
There is no reason to pull a Hurst shifter! From all I've seen it is the **** that is the culprit. I have no rattle with a MOMO Combat Silver, no "wheel weights", etc. The only thing I'm considering is a little insulation wrapped around the shaft to hold down heat and some minimal noise.
Yeah, I didn't really mention it or focus on the cost, but $45 (plus $7 shipping) is really an excellent deal, considering what the MOMO's and other ***** cost, and then considering the extreme quality of this MGW item. It even comes nicely boxed. cushioned and protected, AND they provide the Allen wrench to tighten the setscrew.
