I've decided to run a hot wire kit off the alternator and can't find the weatherproof connectors that I could use to make a factory-like setup. There is Racetronix and Casper's, and I am hoping those who have installed and used them can give me some insight into which is the better one. Casper's seems a little more simple in design but uses 12 gauge from the alternator and Racetronix uses 10 gauge. I saw a write up somewhere and the Racetronix seemed to have a lot of wire left over that you have to coil up and hide. Directions seem to be non existent. There is only $10 difference between the two kits, so money isn't the main consideration. Any insight would be appreciated. The car is a 2000 supercharged A4 with other tricks. Thanks, Rod
I have, or had, the Caspers hotwire kit. It is a very good kit made with quality parts. It handled two 340 pumps just fine. Once I upgraded to two Walbro 450 pumps and e85, I simply copied the hotwire kit with 10ga wire and a 50amp relay. Either kit you mentioned is good.
If u run the racetronix kit run the ground to the in-line filter in the tunnel (next to tranny) . That way u have minimal left overs. Do not make a ground in the wheel well then bunch up all the wires like I've seen people do. Looks horrible and it wasn't ment to be ran that way but u are correct without directions/pictures it's easy to make this mistake.
U can run it either way I personally ran mine through the rockers so I could use the ground for the 12v fuse part on the ground by the alternator and head lights. Then looped it to the alternator (+) ....looks really clean that way...I'll see if I have any pics to show if not I'll take one when I get back home tomorrow
I bought the Casper's hot wire loom for $49. It was totally a plug and play deal. I followed C.Whites idea and ran it through the rocker panel. At start up it idles at 62 lbs.. Keeps a constant 59+ at freeway speed. Drops to 55 at full boost momentarily and then recovers to 58-59. My sending unit for the boost gauge may be a little off after 6 years under the coil cover. It's an excellent upgrade if your supercharged, and even it you're not. It took 1 hour and two silver bullets start to finish. Rod
