This picture is looking into my new from the dealer c5z differential. It has the lash paint on the gear still. The top tooth in the picture I rubbed the paint off with my finger from trying to spin the gear.
I cannot get the carrier to move is that normal? There also isn't a getrag plate on the diff just this sticker in top so I will include that picture for fun. Does this look ok? The bottom side of the teeth the mark is pretty perfectly centered. This mark looks a bit to the heel side of the gear, but is possibly still ok as it doesn't hit the edge actually.
Neither of the spiders are one piece they are both engauged with splines, so as i have been told, they appear to be the c6 style pieces.
Yeah i was looking online and found some pictures and it seems that as long as its on the face its ok, though it is more toward the heel then i would like. The coast side is perfectly centered. Possibly it is just between 2 shims for backlash and that's the best possible fit? It has a 12 month warranty i guess in theory, if it blows up its not a ton or work to take back to the dealer.
That IS the coast side shown. And ,no, it's not okay. Drive and Coast should be equal and opposite each other and centered, ideally. Probably just setup with a depthguage. You might get away with it. A lot of work to do it over though. Good luck.
That does look like the coast side to me as well, although it's hard to tell for sure. If it was mine, coast or drive, I wouldn't be happy with it. You will most likely get some light throttle whine from it once it's worn in. Is it weaker because of this? No. But it isn't right either. One more adjustment on pinion depth could have fixed that. I'm sure the dealer wasnt sparing on time.
This wasn't built at the dealer, its gkn new, so gkn are the lazy ones! I got about 50 miles on it now. I actually got a good opportunity to coast down in neutral and it does have a slight noise in neutral coasting. No detectable noise holding speed, like my old one, or in acceleration, though I haven't gotten on it real hard yet. It is just audible really. I haven't really put any coast loads on it till today so I'm hoping it will clean itself up.
It is going on Road america for a 3 day weekend next weekend so if it is annoying i might see if they will swap it out. Only took me 9 hours solo to replace it so not a HUGE deal. It has a warranty I believe.
It is the convex side of the tooth so i believe its the drive side, I could be wrong. Would make sense i guess if it is the coast side but everything i have read said that convex is drive?
The steeper side, that's 90 degrees to the base is the drive side. The side that's at a 60 degree or so angle is the coast. If your drive side pattern is centered and oval then I wouldn't worry to much about it, just pay attention to the whine. My stock 60k mile Z rear has coast/neutral whine to it too. If that's the factory tolerance on pattern, I could see why...I also have a $3k Moser 12 bolt in my F body, best of everything in it and it whines like a straight cut quick change, set up and delivered by Moser. It is sad to me that it seems that no one can do their job right, ever. I am starting to understand why people buy new cars every few years. It's financially irresponsable, but its the only way you have a chance of your nice things being nice. Too poor to buy a new vette every few years though
