Default Gear Shifter Muffler - anyone try this?

In attempt to rid the cabin of some engine/tranny/vibration noise - I cut a tennis ball in half and placed it over the round hole of the shifter garmet.. I hope the fuzz and the rubber will dampen some of the vibration and noise - well see if this works - but it looks promissing to me.. :yesnod:

Anyone try this?

I havent driven it yet - but I will post the results this afternoon..

That is "thinking outside the box" big time. Please post a follow up after a test drive. That looks so damm simple and effective GM ought to be ashamed.

Over in the C3 section, we have a mysterious and elusive mechanic that does strange things to fix problems on our vettes.

His name is "Bubba" and it looks like he worked one of his expert mechanic fixes on your C5.

Was it an install and run or did you have a chance to meet the mysterious Bubba in person? :jester

If you have not put it back together, I would wrap the shaft in rubber hose prior to putting the tennis ball on. This way the tennis ball will absorb any echo and the hose will dampen noise from vibration. I have a B&M add used 3/8" fuel line and then put 3/4" or 5/8" heater hose around it. It still made noise and to my pleasant suprise, I received a Billet shift know as a gift and it took the noise to stock level. The Billet **** does get hot/cold, so I keep a soft coozy cup in the car - this way I can keep a beer cold for after tennis ;).

I wraped dynamat around my Kirban shifter and it reduced the cabin noise significantly

I had this on all my C5s up until the other day when I put the ken king boot on......I always THOUGHT that the heater hose was making the ripper not as noisy as others had complained about.....

well, the hose was in the way of the tight fitting RAT boot, so I cut it off......guess, what....it is as quiet as ever

guess I must have got a good quiet ripper or I am a deaf mo fo

but hey.....that sh it is pimperocious ghetto licious

later Bro

Will that fit under a Ken King short boot? My neighbor was cutting his lawn and ran over a tennis ball, chopped clean in half. All I need to do is make the hole and install (if it will fit). What timing.

yeah it will fit...reason I took the hose off mine is I have to run the flame ball light up into the flame ball and the hose wouldnt allow me enough room :cuss

I think shift ***** can cure ALOT of rattle....the flame ***** resin plastic MUST do a fine job, cuz mine is quiet :yesnod:

thanks

I did this about two weeks to see if I could quiet my Hurst and keep some heat out. Helped with the heat but had little effect on the buZZZZZ at high RPM. Still need to add some weights to see if that helps.

If you have a Hurst with that big base you can put a big cable tie around it and pinch it closed. Really kill the noise.

You package that with some 'muffler bearings' and you have a hit.:)

Seriously, as Tom said, that's thinking outside the box in a very good way.
