On the C5s, sulfur tends to build up on the fuel sending units and causes the gas gauge to read incorrectly. Something you can try that is relatively inexpensive is to run a bottle of Techron Concentrate through the next couple of tanks of gas and see if the gauge returns to proper working order. Techron can be bought at just about any auto parts store.
I will try the Techron. Thanks for the advice. My first Vette was a 62 I bought right out of high school. It would show full until almost empty then drop to empty. When it dropped, I knew I had to get to a gas station. Again, thanks for the help. This forum is great. Has helped my several times now.
Yeah. Its a well known problem.
Techtron and citco fuel really helped mine for over a year, But a week ago it was on 1/4 tank and my 01 vert started chugging like running out of gas again.
It took 18.5 gals to fill up! (proof my siphon jet transfer is workin).
I guess I'm going back to watching trip odo and filling up every 300 miles again...
It seems like replacing sending units is the safe way to go, but I think I'll use odo til I get confidence in gage again. Good luck with which ever approach you choose.
As was said, search is your friend. Look for the TSB which GM put out which specifies a computer reflash to solve this problem. Techron may or may not ward it off but your baseline action ought to be to get the reflash done.
I had mine done when the TSB first came out and it went from the gauge crashing to zero at very regular intervals - cured by turning the car off for a few mins and restarting - to having never done it since (many years now). And it is mostly run on cheap supermarket gas.
I read on an earlier thread that the reflash will overwrite a tune, so it has to be put back on afterwards.....
Anyone get the reflash lately?
I don't have a tune, can the dealer check the vin records to learn if the reflash was already done back in the day??
How about cost for the reflash? anyone know?

A reflash is a new "load" into the computer, so yes, anything in there already gets wiped. Dealer should know whether it's been done before. I went to a different dealer from usual for a minor problem, and they told me there was an outstanding TSB for my car and a reflash was needed.
My 02 Coupe has never given me a fuel level problem, however for the past 4 or 5 years the fuel gauge in my Eliminator deep V boat has been very erratic. After reading of similar problems and solutions on this forum, I started using Chevron gas which has Techron in the mix, and an occasional treatment of Techron concentrate in the boat, problem solved.
My fuel gauge is now working again like new, thanks to the forum for this easy and economical fix.
