Default How to drain fuel??? Help!

Hey guys,

What is the best way to drain the fuel on my 99? Car has not been started in a long time (3 years) and I want to drain the old fuel. Is there a drain plug on the bottom of the tank or should I just use a pump? Thanks.

Here's the procedure for draining the fuel tank as spelled out in my 2000 service manual.

Fuel Tank Draining Procedure

Tools required: J 34730-1A Fuel Pressure Gauge
J 37088-A Tool Set, Fuel Line Quick-Connect Separator

1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.

2. Raise the vehicle.

3. Remove both of the rear wheel & tire assemblies.

4. Attach a length of flexible fuel hose to an air operated pump device.

5. Position an approved drain container under the left tank fuel sender.

6. Wrap a shop towel around the left tank fuel feed rear pipe.

7. Disconnect the fuel feed rear pipe at the left tank fuel sender using the J 37088-A Fuel Line Quick-Connect Separator tool.

8. Attach the flexible fuel hose from the pump device to the fuel feed pipe nipple using a screw type clamp.

9. Drain the left tank unit until no fuel comes out.

10. Disconnect the pump device from the left tank fuel feed pipe nipel.

11. Cap the fuel feed pipe nipple and the fuel feed rear pipe.

12. Position an approved drain container under the right tank fuel sender.

13. Wrap a shop towel around the fuel sender fuel feed pipe (jet pump to the left tank) at the right fuel sender.

14. Disconnect the fuel sender fuel feed pipe (jet pump to left tank) at the right tank fuel sender using the J 37088-A Fuel Line Quick-Connect Separator tool.

drs211,

I'd just put some moisture absorber in the tank (one that doesn't contain any isopropyl alchol) and burn it out. After a tank or 2 was burned, change the fuel filter.

A buddy of mine once by accident put some leaded racing fuel in his Z-28. He was wondering what a good way to empty the tank might be.

I suggested he disconnect the fuil line at the filter attach a hose and run the cars fuel pump by jumpering a hot wire to it so it would run without the car being started.

He e-mailed back that it worked like a charm. He filled the tank with some regular and pumped that out...the idea being to dilute the small remaining amount of leaded fuel in the tank. He burned that in his old truck. Unfortunately the few miles that he drove the car before getting the leaded gas out of the tank was still enough to ruin his O2 Sensors.

If you should use this method, be sure you are right there to shut the pump down immediately when it pumps all it can get. Don't run the pump dry. Very hard on it.

Good luck.
