I just now found out how to engage comp mode. Problem is the wheels won't spin on my 00 a4 in this mode. It does that garring action like I have AH and TC on, like when you just get in the car and touch nothing and try to power brake. The only time the tires will think about spinning is when the AH and TC is off. I'm told that it should be easier to spin in comp mode than in AC, TC off mode(yellow slippery when wet symbol on ). Whats the deal?
You're sure you've engaged Competitive mode? It said Competitive Mode on the DIC? Remember, you have to hold down the button for 5-7 seconds while the car is stopped (pre-2001).
The whole purpose of the Competitive Mode, as I understand it, is to ALLOW wheelspin without the TC interfering but still allow the computer to help straighten the car up if you get into trouble.
The main purpose For Competitive Mode, I assume, would be Autocrossing where Active Handling would be benificial but Traction Control wouldn't.
If you aren't showing any codes the dealer may be hard pressed to find a problem but it may be worth a shot.
It still sounds like you are not truly in competitive mode. The DIC should show "comp mode" and the message should remain in view unless you hit "reset".
Glad you figured it all out. I looked at your other thread on this topic and now understand there is a much greater difference in active handling 1 vs. 2 than I thought. It makes me glad I waited for the 2001 model. :yesnod:
You just touched on a question I've had for months. If you clear "Competitive Mode" off the DIC by pressing RESET, is Competitive Mode on or off? My guess is "OFF"; my hope is "ON". Thanks for any answers!
Not sure about all model years, but on a 2001-2002 it is still in competitive mode after clear. It is just not displaying on the DIC. Same with traction control turned completely off or any other message..
Competitive mode is Active Handling ON, Traction Control OFF. The 97 does not have it, as it never had Active Handling. The 98 might have it, as Active Handling was an option later in the year. If the text around the button says Traction Control, then you do not have it. If the button says Active Handling, or something like that, then you do have it.
Remember, for 2000 and before, the car has to be stopped to engage it. For 2001 or newer, it as 2nd gen Active Handling and the car can be moving.
I would also like to know if I have this feature. There is nothing around the button but the DIC does say Traction System ON/OFF. I tried holding down the button for 10+ seconds both with the car running in N and again in 1st. Looks like I'm out of luck :cry

hitting "reset" does not turn off the selected mode, it simplys clears the display
It was introduced as an option in 1998 and made standard in, I think, 2001 (maybe 2000). If the button doesn't say anything about Active Handling, then you don't.
