I have a '99 coupe w/17k miles. What is the deal with that crappy looking coolant? should it be changed this early?? kind of has a faded pink sludge look.
The coolant is DEXCOOL, and is pink (or some people call it orange). It's made by Texaco and can NOT be mixed with the regular type greenish antifreeze. Changing it every 50,000 miles or so would't hurt, Just don't use the regular green suff. The Dexcool is sold by most auto supply stores. And, Welcome to the Forum. :D
thanks guys for the help! i have been reading this forum for a couple of years now but have not posted much. so is it pretty easy to change (the coolant) myself? anything else i should look at?
Repairs to date:
Left Rear seal replaced two times
Top squeek
parking brake adjusted (but i think it needs it again)
colume lock fixed under recall
I have read not to mix the orange/pink coolant with any other coolant. I also know it's a biatch trying to get all the coolant out, but I don't know where all the vent ports are. Why can't you switch to the green coolant? Is something suppose to be better about it (besides the environmentally friendly crap), or
is the orange/pink stuff suppose to be better for an aluminum engine???????    Thanks
I was told that over time the Dex-Cool (Extended Life Coolant) becomes gooey. I had it drained and refilled at 25K and mixed it with distilled water, bought at the supermarket......cheap insurance.

Yup...it works great but gets sludgy over time...change it out with new Dexcool or Texaco/Dexcool (the General and Texaco developed it together) :flag :seeya :chevy
I've got 90% distilled water with Redline wetter in mine and it works real good. The fluid looks great, too.
there is a drain on the radiator that'll get most of the coolant out of the system but not all. It's on the passenger side. You could let it drain, sel it and refill with distilled water w/ wetter and have a 70/30 mix.
