Default Burning Oil after HPDE

Ok, I did my first High Performance Driving School this past weekend. Boy was it fun. I pushed the car hard...but that's what you are suppose to do right?

Anyways, before I went, I occasionally noticed the smell of burning oil when I parked in the garage. But now I am having the smell, smoke AND I'm dropping oil. :mad

Anyone know what is the likely cause of this? I have a 2001 Coupe with the MN6. I recall some talk of oil consumption on my year and have noticed some, but it was always minor... until now. Any Advice? :bb

By dropping do you mean dripping on the floor, or the level (on the dipstick) is dropping?

On the floor for sure. Not sure about dropping oil level cause it just started. BUt it does seem lower... Why do you ask?

Where is it dropping from?

If it is from the air bridge or coming out the air filter you may need to replace the PCV valve. Worked for me.

Because I don't see how an oil leak can be related to burning oil. Unless like MJM said it is caused by the PCV system.

I guess if it is leaking the first thing to do is find where it is leaking from. Make sure it's oil and not some other fluid, since I've heard more about leaking diffs and trannys than engine oil (even though they're at the other end of the car).

Good luck.

Your going to use more oil on track days, thats expected. But when burning lots of oil with normal soccer mom driving, that isn't expected.

I wouldn't related the dripping oil or the oil smell to the consumption problem. Best thing to do is check it out yourself or have someone else look at it. Problems like that never get better on thier own.

Thanks for all the input guys. I love this place. :cheers

Hate to ask a stupid question, but where is the PCV Valve? :blush2

I took a quick look around the engine and everything looks fine. No sign of oil leaking anywhere. Tried my best to look at the exhaust manifolds and they look clean. I thought there was a leak that may be dripping onto the exhaust which could be creating the smoke. But the car is so low, it is hard to see everything.

So do you have oil pooling below your engine? Did you have any oil spots where you parked after the event?

If not, and you're only down half a quart or so, don't worry. Thats normal for a high speed event.

Matt

let me know if you actually had puddles of oil under your car

I wouldn't call them puddles, only oil leakage for the first time. And smoke, not serious, not noticable. I took the covers off and its dirty under there! :mad But no obviously signs of significant leakage....

I went to the dealer the other day because low oil level came up on my display. He said that it was burning oil over 2000 or 2500 rpm's. He said the problem was my oil ring, but they have a new one that will fix the problem under warranty. He also said I should get it fixed because these cars are meant to be driven hard and shouldn't have to worry about burning oil. My car is a 2002 coupe. I'm not sure if this is whats wrong with yours but I thought I'd throw in the suggestion.

If the oil was coming from the air bridge (when you open the hood, the thing in front that comes off the top of the engine and connects to the air filter) or oil is under the front air dam (dripping from where the air box connects to the openings in the fog light areas) you might just need to replace your PCV.

You might also see specks of oil on the rear of your car due to aerodynamics, or oil on the front crossmember (near the power steering cooler). This is also coming out of the air bridge/ filter and blowing back under the car.

A new PCV costs about $5 from the dealership and replacement is equal in difficulty to tying your shoes.

Everybody keeps talking about the PCV valve.
But nobody's saying where it is, and how to tell if it's bad (by looking at it)??

RacerChris,

Try this web address for some real good info. It is an interview with John Juriga, GMs Gen III engine chief of development for the LS1/LS6. It covers the oil consumption issue in depth.

On the LS6 engine, stand on the right side of the car and look just to the rear of the air bridge. You will see a black tube coming out of the intake manifold with a lump in it. If you pull on it the tube will separate from the lump. Inside this lump is your PCV. It looks kind of like the cigarette lighter from your car. Pull the PCV out and replace with new one ($4 from dealership).

Easiest and best solution to oil consumption, is to upgrade to the LS6 PCV/Valley cover assay. The LS6 breaths through the Valley cover, instead of the valve cover where all the oil is being sucked up from and burned in the engine. All 2001/2002 C5s have the LS6 style block, so it will accept the LS6 valley cover and PCV. You will need to pull the intake to replace the valley cover, but its a clean upgrade, and should solve the problem.
