1. what does it take to get GM to recall this gas gage problem? What actually has to take place?
2. Secondly, there are bond to be hundreds of C5 owners who have experienced this problem from the 98's through the 2002. What can we do as a group to force GM to recall this faulty system?
First, an awful lot of folks have to complain to the NHTSA division of the DOT. Then, I think there has to be some sort of safety issue or potential for loss of life to be involved as a result of the defect. I've never heard of a mandatory recall being forced upon a manufacturer by the government for stuff like defective radios, CD players, or gas gauges for that matter. Now, GM could do a voluntary recall, but I'm not holding my breath, are you?
Our problem, as Corvette owners, is that we form a very small constituentcy. The fact that we drive a limited production automobile, in and of itself, reduces any clout that we may have. And we ain't got much. I mean, they sell over a million chevrolets in a year (total new car sales in this country last year topped 16,000,000 vehicles). Of that total, only about 35,000 were Corvettes. It's just numbers, man. Just like everything else.
Hey Blu, We were talking to the GM rep at a seminar during Cruise In 3 and they said that the tank mechanism that looks like a card gets coated. While he couldn't say what gasoline to use, some were better than others at cleaning it and the newest cars have a different part # card. He suggested a different brand of fuel, and if it works you found your fix. I also would use a good fuel injection cleaner as Chevron Techron which may do it and even if not, it is good for your car. Hope this helps!
The hell with the gas gauge issue what about the COLUMN STEERING WHEEL LOCK ISSUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that is a more serious and dangerious problem which CHEVY REFUSES TO ADDRESS ON ALL THE CARS THAT ARE HAVING THIS PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!!!
I believe they did recall the colume lock. Also, this gauge has caused me to run out of gas on 5 occasions do to it not only having the zero effect but you can show gas but none is there. Now have you had to put gas in on a hiway with 75 mph traffic, not fun. If it's bad gas how does it happen on a new car, like mine with less than 2K. Since it's intermittant how do you tell if it's the gas or not.
The recall on the column lock is only for certian vin's if your car was not assembled at a certian plant with that vin code it does not fall under chevys parameters to be fixed which is a bunch of BULLCRAP I SENT A CERTIFIED LETTER TO THE CEO AND GOT A CALL FROM HIS PEOPLE WHO TOLD ME THE SAME THING IF I FEEL THE ITS DANGERIOUS I SHOULD HAVE IT FIXED AT MY EXPENCE THEY WILL NOT COVER MY 98 UNDER THE RECALL EVEN THOUGH ITS DOING EXACTLY WHAT THE RECALLED CARS ARE DOING CHEVY SHOULD BE ASSHAMED AND IF ANYONE GETS HURT BY THIS MALFUNTION I HOPE THE SUE THE ***** OFF CHEVY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 times? Did you have the dealer look at it? I believe there's a TSB?
There is a TSB on the gauge problem. Has to do with bad sending units. I believe the TSB lists units within a certain serial number range taht could be defective.
Are they really telling you that it depends on what plant assembled your car? And here all of this time I thought that all C5s were built at Bowling Green, KY.
marksee5, This is over 3 years. My 00 had the sending units replaced twice and it failed again for the third time but GM wouldn't fix because it was out of warranty. My 02 has the same problem with less than 2k. Ran out waiting for parts and during the initial failure. Ran out twice with the 02 and whats funny is the second time I was coming from the dealer after they ordered the sending units. This time 4 gallons filled according to guage. :mad
I have had ALL these same problems!! (the column lock, leaky windows, bad fuel gauge etc etc)...This is exactly why I am SERIOUSLY thinking of trading the car in for something else! I am SO tired of wondering when the next little thing is gonna go wrong! :cuss I just wish that Chevy would recognize all these problems and fix them. This is supposed to be their "flagship" sportscar! :mad
You want to make GM do something about this? It's easy, go see a lemon law lawyer. I did this about a fuel gauge problem I had with a Nissan Truck. Nissan changed the fuel sending unit several times, the instrument cluster and the wiring. The gauge still messed up showing 3/4 of a tank when it was full. Then Nissan had the nerve to tell me there wasn't a problem. So I hit the internet and found others were having the same problem. Found a lawyer and next thing I know Nissan is buying my 3 year old truck for what I paid for it!
Some people didn't think a fuel gauge problem was anything. Me...I like to get what I pay for!
