Steering Wheel Position Sensor
Years ago, I posted several times about a TICK my C5 was making. I got lots of great help at the time, the end result was I had to replace the engine. Lifters were mushroomed at the bottom, camshaft has deep grooves in several lobes and on and on.
Now, I am not happy with the shop that did the engine work, and I don't want them to touch my car again, so that's out!
At some point, I believe the steering wheel was turned while disconnected (maybe tow truck driver, maybe the shop). I now have a "Active Handling Warming Up" followed by "Service Active Handling Soon" message.
This is what I want to do, please advise me!
Using a paper clip, measure the voltage on the light blue wire, closest to the middle of the connector, on the SWPS.
I am assuming it will not be between 2.4v and 2.7v
With the wheels pointed straight ahead, remove the bolt in the steering linkage.
Turn the steering wheel in both directions to determine which way will get me to the correct 2.5ish volts.
Once 2.5ish is achieved, re-install the bolt in the linkage.
Is this a reasonable approach? The dealer wants $400 and I supply the sensor. I'm worried I'm going to blow the airbag sensor.
If you suggest just replacing the sensor myself, the only one's I can find are for 2001 and up, mines a 1998.
Thanks in advance for your help. There are great threads here on replacing the sensor, and I will do that if you think my process won't work.

You cannot use the 2001 and newer SWPS in earlier cars.
Rule of thumb is to not rotate the steering wheel more than 180 degrees while the column is disconnected or you can damage the clockspring. You sh0uld be fine for what you plan to do.
