I have a 2000 FRC that I have owned for a couple of months. At low rpm's in first and second gear, I hear a rattle that comes from underneath the rear of the car. It sounded like it might be part of the exhaust. I took the car into the dealer for service, and they informed me that they thought the sound was coming from the differential. They serviced the differential, but the sound is still there. At this point they think that they sound is normal for a 6-speed, but they don't have any other 6-speeds to compare to. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Anyone else experience the rattle? BTW, my car is bone stock.
All 6-speeds have a rattle when starting out. It's usually just noticeable when starting in first or idling at a light. It kind of sounds like rocks in a coffee can. If that's the sound you're concerned about, it's normal.
Thanks for the reply. The rattle is a little irritating, but I guess I can live with it. The car is under warranty for 6 more months, and I am trying to get everything taken care of before it runs out.
When my ’99 A4 was about a year old it developed a rattle that was determined to be caused by the mufflers. They replaced the mufflers under warranty and the noise went away.
I’ve seen several A4 and MN6 cars that had a rattle that was caused by a hairline crack in the brace that goes between the two cats. Most of the time, the intermediate pipe had to be removed to see it. Welding the crack fixed it.
Thanks. I'll have the brace checked the next time I am in for service.
