I bought my '99 a little over 5 years ago. It has headers that were put on by previous owner. How can I tell if they are "long tube headers"? That's what everyone keeps asking me if they are. Thanks.
Long tube headers run from the engine block to just underneath the car near the oil pan and connect to the exhaust outlet piping from there. Shorties are the same length as the stock manifolds (or very close to it) and connect to the exhaust piping just above the top of the oil pan. Google BBK Short headers.
Not a great picture but looks to me like long tubes.
Short tubes allow better ground clearance than some long tubes, and many are CARB compliant. They're also easier to install.
Long tubes give more power for the most part, thus most performance oriented opt for them.
Like he said, it is generally accepted you get more HP from long tube headers. A lot of folks feel they get a healthy HP increase with shorties. For me it was all about the sound. I have LT headers with a Corsa exhaust and the car sounds great!
Jack one side of the car up from one of the jacking points just behind a front wheel and take a photo from underneath the car. Then we'll be able to tell you for sure - can't tell from the picture. Or google long tube headers and look at some of the pictures. Compare yours from the photos and you'll know.
Long tubes are illegal in most states reason being is that the front 02's are moved up to 3' further back than stock----This makes the front 02's not read correctly or heat up correctly----many times users will install LT's and their power will actually be less until they get their car re-tuned--nature of the beast--As much as 30 RWHP is on the table with LT's properly tuned
Shortys however are legal in all states---because they retain the stock 02 locations
They do not have the ability for 30 RWHP gains--but you can get an easy 10-12 RWHP and they require no additional tuning--

Not sure what kin of headers youve been round that were newly installed. My tuner, at the time, purposely ran it on the dyno without a tune just see what it gained from just simply bolting them on. Picke upd 20rw and 14tq. After his tune, i gained a total of 35rw and 21-22tq.
In a state where they are illegal--The LT's are a visual inspection--- All cars have to be smogged here every 2 years only exception is a new car is excempt I think for 6 years
Some smog shops will overlook headers But most don't If they don't see cast headers they assume they are NON stock there fore illegal unless they have the "CARB " plate welded to the tubes---Shortys will usually have this plate LT's never---

I said many times--not always----Don't nit pick over a few HP----The point I am trying to make -- most people understand----You won't get the full HP potential without a custom tune---
My experience on a bone stock engine yes you may get more than 10-12 RWHP with LT's But the more modded your engine is cam heads-intake manifold boosted---chances are you will see very little or no HP gains until after a tune with LT's
Not nit picking at all. Just be more clear in what you mean next time. There was no mention of OTHER mods in ur previous post. You simply stated many times users will lose hp when installing LT's until a tune which is NOT true. You didnt mention if they were previously modded
