I posted in the FI/Nitrous section, but very few people really read that, so I thought I'd post here too.
Mike Norris has my car back together and running, but has run into a real problem.
It's overheating.
Sitting at idle with the air on, something that is pretty common in Orlando traffic, it goes above 240 degrees and keeps climbing if he doesn't shut it off.
He's adding a 14 inch pusher fan and Water Wetter, but no go. Slows down the problem, but it still overheats.
Oh, forgot to add. It's a D1-SC, not a P1-SC.
We're really stuck! Can't have my car back until this gets fixed.
Re: Overheating with a Procharger -- HELP!!! (tscales)
Tom, I am experiencing the same thing... another member and I are working on a solution that will work. I will contact you by IM once it is finished... should be a week or so. Dont get caught in Stop and go traffic in the meantime... ;)
Re: Overheating with a Procharger -- HELP!!! (tscales)
Tom,
I went with the BeCool radiator but I was not convinced it would be enough either. I also put an oil cooler on mine to help pull heat out of the engine. I did not want to mount the oil cooler in front of the radiator because I wanted only cool air into the engine radiator. I mounted mine behind the driver’s side front tire, behind the wheel well. I used a powered fan and it works very well to keep the oil cool as well. I put a stainless perforated metal screen in front of the oil cooler and you are hard pressed to see the cooler. I also mounted dual 1 quart oil filters to the front of the shroud (where the stock intake was located) and I drilled a few 7/8” holes through the shroud to add some cooling to the filters.
Although I have not updated my sig yet my current setup is a 402 cid engine with a T trim supercharger and I am running currently running at about 650 RWHP. I have not had any over heating problems with my cooling setup. This weekend we will be pushing up the boost to go over 700HP and I think the cooling will not have a problem with it.
Re: Overheating with a Procharger -- HELP!!! (Quick Brick)
I would look at the DRM cooling package. Doug offers a serious radiator. The S/C doesn't make boost at idle so where is the heat coming from?
Good question. The 422 certainly generates more heat, but I think the main problem is the relocated and under powered fan. It's just drawing in hot air from the wrong place.
Re: Overheating with a Procharger -- HELP!!! (tscales)
Installing a larger radiator only heats things up more. The ATI shroud is too restrictive, the Fan does not spin fast enough to cool the radiator, the Intake is now located on the backside of the Shroud drawing hot air into the S/C, and to top it off... the Intercoolers are not worth a dang!! :(
Tom, Like I said... we are going to have all of this fixed VERY QUICKLY ... I will IM you with the info when it is done... ;)
Re: Overheating with a Procharger -- HELP!!! (tscales)
I'm sure you guys have already checked this, but make sure there isn't any air in the cooling system. After doing my heads and cam install, I had that very problem and my car overheated. Once I got the air out and topped off the coolant, everything was fine. Also, are you guys getting any detonation? If you're running lean, it will run hot sometimes. Did you guys tune it after the installation? Also, I read on another forum where a LS1 powered Firebird (I think?) had a blower installed and was overheating. He said his coolant was turning brownish and someone suggested that he may have a blown head gasket. Might want to check your coolant to make sure it isn't changing colors. Best of luck....
