Default Column lock

Morning all! I've been lucky until recently - read the posts and have already ordered the LMC5 from compliance, but I just wanted to get folks opinion.

1998, stock 65k manual - had both recalls/fixes done at GM. The GM harnes was just installed 13 months ago - go figure.

Drove my car from Denver to NOVA - lots of rain in Kansas - Washed my car last week and lightly rinsed/wiped down the engine, covered all electronics, left radio on and went to start and got the pull key and wait 10 seconds, then column lock.

Charged my 9yr ol AC delco battery and no error, so I figured the battery was at its end of life and bought a new interstate 800cca with 110 rc - put it in and have pull key and column lock issue.

Steering wheel doesn't lock no matter with key in or not and I hear the pin retracting/moving. after reading posts I cleaned every ground on the car except at starter as I have no way to get under there. Pulled all the noted fuses, 23, 25, 37 and nada.

Plugged in my OBD reader and showed no codes, but using the display it showed alot with H:

P1626, C1255, B2587, B2592, U1064, U1096, U1160 - reset them all.

Have recharged the battery trying to get it to work as did with the AC delco, but nada. Oh, also, noticed the first AC delco battery must have leaked sometime from purchase in 2000 - man it was a mess, had to take a grinder to get one of the 4 battery mount bolts off - the back nut kept spinning. had to clean and repaint down there!!!!

What do you think.. GM harness fix failed? I guess just wait on the LMC5?

Likely the GM K Harness fried when the battery went south:

You could try removing the GM K Harness and reconnecting the lock motor plug to where it was originally connected. K Harness was installed in electrical series between the lock motor plug and the connector that goes back to the BCM.

Otherwise wait until the LMC5 arrives. It abandons all factory and recall wiring so you will need to do nothing with the fried K Harness.

Your OBD II reader can ONLY see standardized emissions related codes and NOT vehicle specific codes.
Thanks! Correct, it shuts off when I try to drive - could hardly get it back into the garage, thankfully I had just rolled back out of the driveway when it died.

Can that specific relay be replaced? or maybe not worth it.

If you must drive the car before the LMC5 arrives then just take the K Harness out of the circuit as explained above.
I'm not in too much of a rush.. no worries.

one more question - is relay 37 supposed to be warm and how would you test it. I pulled it again and left it out longer and the the code went away, but as soon as I tried to drive the fuel shut off ! ha..

I was going to pull it again and noticed it was really warm. Car had only been running for a min or so.
