I'd like to hear how you handled it .. I got one yesterday .. fuel gauge went to E, Check Gauges illuminated and Low Fuel on the DIC. Pulled P1431HC (I was driving while I looked at it). Of course I went to a station and refueled, and shortly after re-starting the car, the gauge went back to normal, and the 'C' in the code went away.
After looking at previous posts and reading the service manual entry, I'm inclined to wait and see if it happens again. Have any of you had good luck with an intervention for this problem? I seen posts suggesting injector cleaner (to de-gum the fuel sensors), PCM reprogramming or fuel sender replacement. What worked for you?
Re: If you've gotten the P1431 code ... (Jerry Velders)
A cheap tank of gas?
I use Chevron exclusively in my C5. Once when I was out of town and needed a quick fuel-up, I used some other convenience-store brand. Within 50 miles, I had the fuel-gauge problem you described. Next stop, filled with Chevron, and the problem quickly disappeared. That is the one and ONLY time I have had the fuel-guage problem show up.
Is it coincidence that the one time I experienced the problem was the exact same time I used non-Chevron gas? Could be, but I'm sticking to Chevron...
Re: If you've gotten the P1431 code ... (Kent1999)
join the club. it hit me one morning and has been fine since. I stick to brand name (amoco, exxon, hess) 93 octane. I have heard fuel injector cleaner can help as sulpher can build up. on the 02's i have heard of a pcm flash but others have said that doesn solve anything. replacing the fuel sending units will solve it but only temporarily it seems since they replace them with the same units :mad so just stick with good gas and cross your fingers.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I guess I'll try changing gas stations and seeing if it recurs. If it does, I guess I'd go for the PCM reflashing first. I'd sure like to keep my car out of the hands of the service dept .....
Re: If you've gotten the P1431 code ... (Jerry Velders)
Hey Now:
If you check the code while driving, then reset the code, and the gas gauge will read the normal level again. I have done this many times.

I have the same problem.I have an '02 and it has done it twice.Changing fuel brands doesn't always work. After my first time I switched to chevron. two tanks later it happened again :mad . I will be taking it in to be fixed  this coming week.
