Default Help ! Throwing Code # C1286 ..Can't figure out why .

My DIC reads "service engine soon " and when i pulled the codes i got code # C1286.

Has anybody else had this problem ?? Any idea what is causing my PCM to throw this code ?? Once its cleared it comes back in 15-20 mins..Car is running fine.

Thanks for the suggestions !

Just spoke to my Good Old trusty Tech at Anderson Chevrolet in Los Gatos. ( i miss haveing him local  ) If any of you No Cal guys are looking for a great shop..I suggest you check these guys out.

He told me that there's a steering sensor located at the base of the steering column ..He's pretty sure that its damaged and needs to be replaced.
Hopefully thats all it is.

C1286 Steering Sensor Bias Malfunction

Best to take it in to the dealer...

I had C1287 after we disengaged the steering shaft for the header install, but that is because we put the shaft back in 360 degrees out of sync. Popped the knuckle on the shaft, spun the wheel 360 degrees, reattached, and everything has been fine ever since.

1286 I have no idea how to fix and my manuals are in my office.

Assuming you haven’t disconnected the steering gear recently, it would have to be the steering wheel position sensor or less likely the EBTCM (electronic brake control module) unless the service active HNDLG message was displayed as well.

To test the sensor, you need a scanner. It should read 2-3 volts.

Bill / Batmobile , Thanks for the feedback ! Batmobile , did you feel something was wrong with the steering ?? Or was the problem transparent ?

Wasn't there a TSB on that being a phantom code or something?

Hmm..if thats a phantom code then i'm one happy camper :yesnod:

But i doubt it , C1286 means there is a "Steering Sensor Bios Malfunction "..Whatever that means.

C4C5tech are you around ?? If so please explain..

Thanks !

Umm, could this be related with your supercharger install from MMS?

Didn't they have to take the front end apart to do the install?

Good luck and I hope it is not serious.

I'm pretty sure that it does have something to do with the ATI set up ..I wasn't throwing any codes before the install.

I'm going to bring it to the dealer and have them run some diagnostic's..I'm keeping my finger crossed in hopes that its just a damaged sensor.

Steering position sensor :yesnod: The column has to come out to replace it...The phantom code 1287 is on the 2001-02 second generation ABS :yesnod:

Hello, I'm and ASE CMAT and C1286 is phantom code. It can trigger all of the above. It may say it's a steering sensor, or a bad brake cable. A defective ABS unit can flag this and so can a missing Air Bag or E-bake bulb in the Instrument cluster. Ignore it, or spend a year trying to figure it out. It does not affect driveabilty in my C5 or my GMC Jimmy.

Default Honestly mine was a near money shift.

Hey Jeff, Recently a first time owner 99 6sp. Both times ive attempted to or near money shifted. I threw this code. One with a light and one without. But one was thrown with TS on and one Off with ancient gas in it. Which vorrected itself. Im hoping a few hundred miles ofnl being nice corrects my second one here. Steering i noticed is little more stiff.
As always , Thanks for the input guys !
