Default Does this sound about right??? (cam install)

I just got a TR cam installed yesterday...it took a while for the PCM to relearn some of the things but it's catching on fast...well my question is...my car's pretty much stock except for the intake (Blackwing) and exhaust (Triflo). I never dynoed (spelling???) it before but I had them hook it up today and here's what it ran:

DYNORUN 1 Max Power = 332.8 Max Torque = 329.0
DYNORUN 2 Max Power = 320.3 Max Torque = 320.2
DYNORUN 3 Max Power = 324.4 Max Torque = 319.7
DYNORUN 4 Max Power = 323.9 Max Torque = 323.7

I was expecting it to be a lot higher but was told that since I had the stock headers on it, that my numbers wouldn't be as high as they could be, and that with some headers I could expect it to be around 350-360rwhp. I was expecting it to be around that to begin with. I am going to have some tuning done hopefully on monday and hope to pick up a little more there...can someone tell me if this is typical of a cam job (cam only) on a stock car and if not, where abouts should it be?

A cam'd only car with blackwing and catback should make right around 335-340 (with 97-00 style intake manifold) or 340-345rwhp with the 2001+ style intake manifold.

Add heads and you'd be 360-375rwhp. Add headers without cats and you'd be 400rwhp+.

Sounds about right, maybe a little low. The stock headers are really holding you back.

I think those numbers are about right, except I think headers and offroad pipes will still put your up around 365-375rwhp with stock heads.

I took a similar route to you (cam before headers), but I've never dynoed my car.

Well hopefully on Monday I can get Lou to squeeze out a couple of more ponies out of her...I had no idea the stock headers were that restrictive. I was reading another thread that was a poll for the best headers for a C5...looks like FLP's were in the lead. So yall think I could hit 360rwhp by adding on the headers? Would I need to do anymore tuning after the headers as well? My ultimate goal I guess is to get somewhere around 400 rwhp one of these days :D hoping I will be able to stop there. I guess a set of headers is the next thing I need to get. I guess too I was expecting too much from the intake and exhaust...I know a stocker runs at what 290rwhp or something like that? So I guess 332 is ok...so lets see..a jump from 290 to 332 would mean a jump from 345 to 390 to the flywheel or something like that. How much do yall think it would jump up with a good set of headers?

First I assume your car is a MN6?

It's not that the stock headers are that restrictive(even though they are), but a good set of long tube headers help draw exhaust gas out of the head by allowing exhaust pulses tuned per runner. This makes a big difference when you start throwing bigger cams in there. Similar w/ intake, which of course gets more air in per intake stroke which is part of a cams purpose to take advantage of. Tuning will also help alot.

Unfortunately I have an A4, which I can assume is where I am losing a lot of the power...I do not have it tuned yet...so you can guess how it's riding right now on stock programming. It's driveable but I think to get the most out of it I need to get it tuned. If I'm running it at 332 right now, how much hp would I pick up from tuning? How much does a header install cost?

I would assume 10hp from tuning depending on how bad it is off. Header install should not be much(TPIS were easy to install), but depending on the model you go with you may require some welding. I would say anywhere from 2-$400.

Whats the specs on that cam?

I had about 355 after the cam installation and lost after adding taller gear and torque converter. Hopefully with tunning, I can regain some hp, but I use et's as the gauge not hp.

What are the specs on the cam?

You need a new converter to take advantage of the cam, atleast 3000 stall imho. Headers are a must too. After that and tuning (raise shift points up) you will be pretty damn fast!

I believe the specs on the cam are:

220/220 .561/.561 114 LSA 1500-6500 RPM Power Band.

I can tell I am going to need my shift points changed...doesn't seem to shift when it is supposed to shift...I think it's because of the jump in the size of the cam. Idle right now is kinda scary, but hopefully I'll be allright when I get the idle raised. Well what do yall think I would need to do to it next to get up to 400rwhp?

Your cam is mild. To reach 400rwhp on an A4 you will alteast need a bigger cam + a good set of ported heads.

Got a question for yall...when I am at around 1500rmps the car will surge up to 1700 and then back down, it doesn't do it all the time, but I'm not sure if it is because I need to get the car tuned or what...or is it just the way the car is going to be because of the cam?
