Default Average cost to replace rear main seal?

Hey guys, just wondering what I should expect to pay to replace a leaky rear main. I know its a pain in the *** and the drivetrain needs to be dropped so its not cheap, but want to know so I dont pay too much. Im in California.

don't until you need a clutch, just live with it

it's a full day job

seal is around 20 i would guess and labor 500 on a buddy deal or 800-1000 shop rate.

the drip really isn't doing any harm, just annoying

Wait until you need the clutch done and do it all at once. Not going to hurt anything just keep an eye on the oil level

Definitely wait until you need a clutch or do one at the same time since it's the same amount of labor. Unless it's an Automatic car.

Here's a breakdown
-rear main seal (buy the rear cover and it comes with the seal) ~$70
-oil galley plug (often cause of the leak and is behind the above mentioned cover) ~$10
-clutch kit with flywheel(if manual, a must) ~$400 and up depending on power needs
-slave cylinder (if manual, a must) ~$150
-labor is 7.5-8 hours in the book. so depending on shop labor rates ~$750-1000

Remove drive train and replace rear cover gaskets, rear main, and install new LS7 clutch kit w/ flywheel, master & slave cylinders.

Thanks guys. Its an automatic, so no clutch to deal with. Same deal? Just watch the oil level? Shop said its leaking pretty good. They also said that the PCV hoses are deteriorated and leaking. Their thoughts were that they would fix all this then see if theres any more leaks. I was tempted to have them fix the hoses and not do the main seal. I dont know. Tough to stomach dumping $2k+ into this car especially if its "OK" to drive with a leaky main seal. Or is it different for an automatic?

$2K ?? Yikes. We charge less than half that to do a rear main on a Corvette.

The PCV stuff most certainly needs attending to. Crank case pressures being thrown out of wack due to a faulty PCV system can cause leaking seals to leak worse.

Good luck!

There was actually a few other items that brought it up to $2k that I didnt realize that im going to pass on. The rear main is about $1000. Also found out the tranny pan is leaking pretty good, they want about $250 for that. $70 for the hoses.

I was told that most of the oil is coming out of the rear main. That area is clean, which I was told is because the oil is dripping there so much that it washes the old oil off and doesnt allow it to build up.
