I just installed a new hurst shifter over the weekend in my car. Its not quite what I expected. I think its going to take some time for me to get used to it. I like the shorter front to rear shift movement, but the side to side movement is now so small, I've got to think about which gate I'm lined up with. I'm hoping that more experience with it will alleviate this concern. I didn't change the springs that shipped with it, so I might try changing the springs in a week or two if I still don't like it. Anybody else have a similar concern?
Mark, I also installed my new Hurst this weekend. I like it better than the b&m ripper that I had in my Z. I found that once I "trusted" the shifter I never missed a gear, and I power shifted frequently. You will find that once you get used to it, it only requires light pressure on the 1-2 shift, and just let it seek it's on center on the 2-3 and 3-4 shifts. Try to avoid guiding the shifter and you will be surprised how easy it shifts. Three weeks from now you'll never be able to go back to the stock unit. :):) I find reverse just a little hard to use, but then I don't back up that often. :0
I also installed the Hurst this weekend...love the short throws, and yes I've had some minimal problems the the lateral throw (put it in 3rd instead of 5th, oops). Overall I like it, like any shifter it'll just take some getting used to.
You guys have any trouble with the notorious "rattle" from Hursts? So far mine is quiet.
I have had my 02 drop top for about a week now and really want a shorter shifter. I am not that concerned with a performance shifter so to speak, just a shorter stick. Does anyone make just a shorter stick for the Vette? If I have to go to a Hurst I will but it isnt necessarily what I want. I want something that is easy enought to drive around with everday since this is now my daily driver. Any ideas?
Yes mine rattles in 2nd and 3rd. I find it mostly does it when I have a low RPM high throttle condition. Not exactly lugging the motor but certainly not in the power band either. Definately will rattle though, guess I need to change the exhaust so I won't hear it. :)

No rattle from mine. I did take out the 2 stop screws since I understand they aren't really needed. I'm not sure if this made any difference, but I think others have thought they were a possible source of rattles.
I have tried all the spring combinations and prefer the lightest springs. I have had a little problem with rattle in mine, it seems most noticeable after installation/changing springs, then it quietens down a bit as it settles in.
I inverted the closeout boot but didn't cut it in case I ever wanted to put the stock shifter back in. After seeing someone put half a tennis ball around the shifter I installed a couple of pieces of foam rubber this weekend. This has sealed between the neck of the boot and the shaft of the stick. This has made the car noticeably quieter as it eliminated the slight transmission whine I used to hear. Actually, I quite liked the whine as it made the car feel harder !
**** Finger--Mine is a daily driver too. I've seen someone sell a cut-down stock shifter but it cost just as much as a hurst. I have one set of the soft springs in my hurst with 2 full turns on the screw...it's not uncomfortable at all for dail use.
My stops are still in and they don't seem to cause any trouble.
I did used the flapper from a toilet (yes a new one ) cut the plastic flange around it off and slid it down the shifter shaft...dampens vibration much like the small rubber boot on the base of the stock shifter...cost $1.19.
I suppose some foam in the inverted boot would block noise but probably not dampen it as much as the tennis ball or flapper. I might do that as well.
Where did you guys get your shifters? What should I expect to pay for one? How much shorter than stock are they? Anyone have any pics of it after installation?
I got mine from someone who used for 800 miles and didn't like it, paid $150 for it and a Vette Essentials short shift boot (a must IMO, it's beautiful).
They're going for about $150 new from a vendor (can't remember which one...look in the C5 Parts for Sale/Wanted section, you'll see it).
I'd worry about the foam rubber eventually disintegrating and falling into where it aint supposed to be. A replacement rubber piece is easily obtained from the parts dept of your Chevy dealer if you ever want to go back.
LAPD, tell them to clean up their specs so they don't rattle. We might not have to spend so much on *****. Some rattle some don't, I emailed them and they said it's normal to rattle, don't think so, because half on the forum do not have that problem.......the pivot assembly is where the problem is.
Yes, I know it's something I'll have to keep an eye on and maybe change the foam rubber every year. Unfortunately my nearest Chevy dealer is about 3,000 miles away so getting parts replaced isn't so easy !
