Here are the pics of my "surgery" on the shifter and demon key. I hope they are amusing. I just realized I did not take a pic of the final installation of the ****/hurst. That would have been a good idea. Anyway, trust me, it looks  .

Here is what was left of the **** when I was done. Nicked a couple of threads, but the shifter was okay:

Here is where the surgery was conducted, the towel was protecting the boot (note the Mechanix gloves and Kerbeck poster, both from Carlisle):

Here is what was left of the key after about 8 hours of abuse:

Sorry, but that is un freaking real...This is my fault!!! I did not read your post cause I did not know what you menat by "Demon Key".

If you had mentioned that you needed help pulling that god D@%# :cuss :cuss :cuss :cuss :cry :cry :smash: :smash:   Shifter pin...I would have immediately responded with my solution...

Please accept my apologies. :p:

Glad to see you got it done...

Nice pics. Glad to see you had the fortitude to stick with it and get your new shifter in. I think you've set a new Forum record for dealing with that stinkin' shifter pin. :seeya

What was Chevy thinking when they put that thing in? Me and buddy finally got my dad's out with a set of vise-grips, screw driver, and wood. It took about 30 mins. We just put on a new **** though.

I think it may be a record for "factory **** destruction" but I know others who have cut the shifter itself. I knew I needed the boot and the isolator, so I had to sacrifice either the shifter or the ****. I knew I may need the shifter someday, but my new **** could go on either shifter. So by process of elimination, the factory **** went. It was a scary feeling staring at it with razor-knife in hand. I wish I had a better pic of the **** after using the high-speed cutter. The one I posted should be a close up, it was ridiculous. I had to teach it who was boss. Anyway, on a more serious note, all I want to do is drive the Vette around with the new Hurst, but I barely got the car out and it started raining. It's supposed to last until Sunday. I may be nuts by then. Thanks again to all who helped.

Matt

Well done Matt, glad to see it didn't defeat you ! What would have been really good would have been a video of you carrying out the entire mod. At 8 hours duration focussed on one man's struggle it would have qualified as an Art Film and probably won you a Palme d'Or at the Cannes film festival !!! :jester

Which springs did you settle on ? After trying them all I settled on the lightest ones and also removed the stop screws so that they wouldn't rattle loose and block the even numbered gears.

You did remove the screws or loctite them into place didn't you ? Please don't tell us you got yourself stuck in gear in the back end of beyond somewhere ?!! :bb

I did not really have a chance to drive it, but I was amazed how stiff the Hurst installed springs were. So I started out with the lightest inner and outer springs. I have a feeling they will be a little too soft once the loosen up, and I may change. But, it's raining and is supposed to continue to do so for a week, so who knows when I will actually get to drive it!

I loctited the stop screws, but I was really careful to back them off enough and to get them really tight. I may remove them in the future if I decide to go in there and change springs. We'll see.

That's really a nice-looking job...you should have been a brain surgeon! :D

But really, you've got to be the king on this well-noted problem. Glad it worked and all will be ok once you get used to the Hurst.
