I want to put a low temp thermostat in. Is there a consensus on which temp range to use? I live in Indiana and it can get pretty cold, low teens at times. I refuse just to put her up for the winter but I don’t want to freeze to death on that occasional nice snow free day. I have the basic bolt on mods.
I went with the 180 degree and am quite happy. With the fan programming of the Hypertech PP3 my coolant temps rarely went over 190 degrees this summer even during a parade in 95+ degrees (I've never seen it over 203 since). I doubt very much that winter will be a problem. Before the new stat, I got roasted out of my ragtop if I dialed in anything over 64 degrees. It seems my electronic climate control is nothing more than an on/off switch.
I used to live in Michigan and tried non-stock tsats. The truth is that the stock stat is fine, it just may help you warm up a little faster. Once warm, the engine coolant temp depends on the air temperature, fan "on" times, normal air flow, etc., NOT the stat. A "cooler" stat is a cheap mod, but not a very useful one for a street driver. :yesnod: :)
Thanks all, I'm doing the low buck stuff now and saving for H/C and headers that will most likely go on next Feb or March. Will do LS1 tune and adjust the fans then also. :D
The thermostat change won't matter unless you adjust the fan turn on temps. Having said that I am with Phillip during the summer use the 160 and switch back to the stock one in the winter. :yesnod:
