im getting ready to drop the engine out from underneith my vette to change the cam and clutch. my question is can the torque tube and rear end stay in place with dropping the engine out of the bottom of the car? i have searched but never found the answer. seems like the rear end always gets dropped with it. if the torque tube stays in place do i need to at least remove the shifter to allow the tube to move some to help with getting the engine loose from it.
I did mine out the top. I did have to drop the cradle a few inches to get the oil pan to clear. But you will have to break the motor loose from the cradle to slid it forward off the torque tube. I left the rearend all in place and didn't touch the shifter.
I am in the process of getting my car back together and am 95% of the way there. I dropped my front cradle and pulled the engine from the top using cajun's write up.
If you are changing your clutch it would be advisable to remove the torque tube to check it out also for any problems. That being said you can do the cam without removing the engine. If you do remove the engine and cradle still pull the tube. No sense in having to remove major parts twice.
can i get the TT out from under the car without having to drop the complete rear end out? just trying to figure out whats my best way of completing both the cam and the clutch at the same time as well as inspecting the TT. I'll prob just go ahead and at least order the couplers to replace them while im in there. what couplers do you guys recommend? I dont dont plan on doing much to it other than the 228r cam, cold air, exhaust and maybe heads next year.
