Completed the C6 shifter upgrade on my 1998 C5 this weekend (purchased from Cultrag Performance). I'm very happy with the result - it looks nice and still looks like a stock design, is an improved shifting experience, and I re-used the existing boot.
Modifying the boot was very simple, cut a few threads at the neck, inverted the boot over the installed ****, and used a tie strap to secure the top of the boot to the bottom of the ****.
I really did not like the fact that the C6 shifter moved the gear shift **** toward the rear. I installed one - then removed it, the **** was just too far back. Currently running a cut down C5 shifter with a new **** - and liking it. But, I really like the look of the C6 shift ****.

Completely with you except for the C6 ****. I find the side tilt on the pattern really off putting. Otherwise I do like it.
As for the rearward bend, I could not use one because of it. The way I'm positioned the **** being further back would just not work.
I sawed off about an inch on the C5Z shifter shaft IIRC, then got a **** from TwistedShifterz. Happy.
Yes - I purchased a used visor HomeLink module off eBay for $20, and then installed it behind the center console with the buttons exposed through the carpet. Works great - very easy to reach.
