Hi, I have a 2001 C5 that has a small intermittent leak from the auto trans. But I believe I have the answer to why this is happening...but not how to cure it. I am led to believe that one of the seals is prone to leaking....but I am convinced that this is caused due to the build up of pressure within the gearbox. Talking to my brother in law...who has worked on Jaguar engines since he left school....40 years ago....he said that all auto transmissions ...in his experience...have a breather pipe. My question is does the C5 have a similar breather pipe. I have just checked the oil level in the C5 and since removing the drain plug and refitting, the Corvette has not dropped a single drip of oil...which leaves me to believe that if I could ensure pressure does not build up within the gearbox....that I would cure the leak. Incidentally, this follows a 40 mile drive...still no leaks. All thoughts appreciated....it is so difficult to talk to Corvette owners this side of the pond........ just not many of them. Cheers.
You shouldn't be getting a leak from the breather tube. If you are it's likely due to the tranny getting too hot. You may want to consider monitoring what your tranny fluid temps are running at and if fairly high installing an aux tranny cooler.
Unless your car's breather tube is blocked, pressure inside the tranny isn't going to be above ambient. I've never worked on a Jag transmission but I have rebuilt a couple of GM 4L60 transmissions like what is in the C5s and problems with the breather tube are not the first place I'd look.
