not sure on the vin but you can look behind the driver side rear wheel, it will be on the inside of the frame rail if you do have one... and if your fuel pump is in the bottom of the tank on the drivers side then you should also have an external filter

IIRC, the production change was made somewhere in the Oct-Nov ('02) time frame.

I believe if you have an RPO code of FFS on the sticker on the glove box door, you have the filter in the tank rather than exposed on the side of the frame rail. My '03 has a VIN ending in 18960 and it has it in the tank (car built in January 2003).
