Any of you fine Chap's that have and use the Tech2 do so along with a lap top?
Reason I ask is, as I'm awaiting the arrival of my Tech2 I have been doing some reading. The TIS2000 TECH2 GM Car Model software loaded in a lap top and connected to the Tech2 can bring up graphs etc, etc to show the parameters and actual real time date on the screen.
So, the purpose of my post is............I would need a Windows XP Op Sys. Lap top and I don't have one so I have my eye on this.

What do you guys think ?
I have my TIS 2000 software running on a Windows 8.1 32 bit Operating System with no problems. The 32 bit is important in this case. I tried it on my 64 bit Windows 7 operating System with no joy. It seems to run perfectly on the 32 bit windows 8.1. I even tried running it on the 64 bit system in XP compatibility mode with no joy. I will be curious as to others experience. Good luck with your new Tech 2 and software.

Zach,
The reason for getting this lap top is two fold, I don't have one to use with the Tech2 outside while in the car and the Desk top i got is a 64 bit Win 7 Op Sys.
Also, the lap top would be used mainly for the car so I don't mind the condition of a used P/C and the best part is.....the Price is right
I had a old laptop with XP and did a fresh install just for the Tech 2 and last week the laptop died !!!!!!!! I have 10 on my good laptop and desktop, sooooo ????????????

I will try the software on one of my Windows 10 laptops and see what it does. I have a computer repair business that I still do part time so I have several O/S to try this on. As I said in the earlier post it would not work on My Windows 7x64 even in compatibility mode. I will let you know what happens.

well it didn't work on my Win 10 (64 bit) laptop ????
Hey guys, I was not able to get the software to install correctly in windows 10.
SGLou make sure the Dell laptop has a serial port on it because you will need that to communicate with the tech 2. After further research I found that the usb to serial adapters do not work well with the tech 2 and TIS software from others experience.
My windows 8.1 laptop is a older version that has a serial port built in so I am good and the O/S is 32 bit and you can enable the 16 bit drivers needed for the tech2 and TIS in the control panel. Hope this helps.

Here is the Tech Specs listed for the Lap top:
Model: Dell Latitude D830 Laptop
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 2.2GHz
Graphics: Onboard
RAM (Memory): 3GB
Hard Drive: 80GB
Optical Drive: DVD Player CD Burner
Ports: 4 USB, Audio and Mic, Ethernet, VGA, S-Vide
Not seeing a Serial Port on the pictures of the Dell.
are you referring to these adapters ?
that is the opposite of what you need: Here is a pic of what a serial port on a laptop looks like,
Here is the adapter that hooks the tech 2 to your laptop,
I have not hooked my tech2 to my car due to weather around here but I will as soon as it warms up.
From talking with others they tell me that a usb to serial adapter does not work properly. They do make a usb to serial port female adapter but that is what I have been told does not work well. I will go to the local dealership and talk with the tech there. I know that they no longer have xp laptops, have all windows 7 32 bit. I will let you know something tomorrow if we don't get to much snow here.
We will figure it all out soon.
I just looked at the description pictures of the laptop you are looking at and the picture shows a serial port just like you need.

Reason: Looked at pictures of the laptop you are buying
I just ordered a refurbished Panasonic Toughbook CF-30. These are military grade laptops that are almost indestructible. There are tons of these available and make the best garage laptop possible. Look it up on Google. You can pick one up for about $300.

I sent the seller a message and got a reply back this morning. Never noticed the Serial Port on the back of the P/C, I was looking at the sides for one !
It appears fairly simple. You need a 32bit OS and a serial port. Doesn't appear to matter if it's XP, Win7,8,or 10. Just meet the first two and rest should work. Since the Tech 2 has been around for a while, safest bet would be XP.
