Since I had a rear tire off for the flat repair if figured I'd venture into adjusting the emergency brake. I ran the star adjuster out 25 notches and while it's an improvement probably not enough but OK for now.
My question is that I understand the adjustment is suppose to be self adjusting. Supposedly as you drift backwords and pull up on the brake handle a few times it snugs up. I could never get mine to do this but the adjuster was pretty much tight and maybe was not free enough to self adjust. Does anyone know if there is truly a self adjusting feature?
I have never had success with the Pull the lever approach... :nono: THe best thing to do is manually adjust the shoes inside the rear caliper. :smash: :yesnod:
The only self adjusting feature I have found in the 2001 service manual is the automatic cable slack take up by the ratchet in the lever mech. This does not help if the problem is shoe-to-drum clearance which can be taken up only by the star wheel adjuster. This requires removing the rear rotors as there is no external access. I took my rotors off and adjusted the star wheel several weeks ago and the emergency brake works great now. I studied the star wheel mech very closely and can see no way that it can self-adjust. The detent spring is so tight that it takes a lot of effort to pry it to the next notch. The service manual makes no reference to self adjustment of the shoe-to-drum clearance. In fact says to remove rotors and manually adjust star wheel. What a PITA!
