What is the difference between the red and yellow Optimas, and which is better suited for everyday use? Is there a re-learning process for the computer when you change batteries?
There is a blue, a red, and a yellow Optima. The red is for ordinary auto use while the yellow is for those that have big drains from stereos and those that let their cars sit for weeks without driving them. Blue is marine. :yesnod:
The C5 will automatically do a relearn whenever the battery is disconnected and then reconnected after a short time. Don't worry about doing anything except having fun driving that Corvette. :seeya
Darn, I guess some people like the yellow and some like the red so I corrected above.
Save your money and try a MAXX Start battery from Wal-mart. It has substantially more cranking amps and cold cranking amps than the stock AC-delco battery and comes with a 9 year warranty. It looks real nice with no top connectors, only the side posts that the Corvette uses and is yellow on the side. Unlike the Optima batteries, this one is the same size as the stock unit so it fits better. I had a nightmare trying to get the Optima battery to fit.....it wouldn't, no one in my state had an adapter for it. The unit I was sold was smaller than stock. Last but not least, the MAXX battery was less than HALF the price of the Optima unit at only $55! :) :)
The yellow has the most cranking amps. It is the one I have...not because it is yellow, but because it won't leave you hanging. They retail for around $180....I got mine for $145.
When I changed my battery recently, I had to perform the engine idle relearn procedure. My car was not idleing properly after the battery swap (it was rough and would almost die when coming to a stop). I also had to reprogram my key fobs, set my clock, and release the electronic lock on the stereo.
Also, I replaced my battery with an AGM (Absorbant Glass Matt) unit so that I wouldn't have to worry about acid leaking down on my PCM or any of the electrical or vacuum connections that are also down there. I like thae idea of a battery with no acid and I got mine for less than a hundred dollars. It came with a 3 year free replacement guarantee and a 7 year warranty. And it came with NO ACID.
I'm using an Optima Yellow Top. The stock battery couldn't handle the stereo system I installed and the lights would pulse a hair sometimes when it idled. Went to the Optima and that cured that and with the car idling stereo, A/C, lights and all at night everything is normal. No charging system errors on my DIC either. :D
If your car is a daily driver get the red top as it is the normal car battery. If you have large loads like an upgraded stereo system or store your car for the winter the yellow top would be better as it handle being discharged and recharged much better. I have the yellow top, great battery. :seeya
