Levi, don't get too worked up until we know what actually happened. You didn't put 'em in there to talk about. :D

The gears were installed by Corvettes of Houston, it has the hardened input shaft. Now I have to get some pics when they start breaking the car down....I wonder if Corvettes of Houston would pay me labor or not...I hope they do, they should stand behind their work. When I first got the gears in my car, I did notice a small whinning sound in 5th and 6th gears, so I think that might have been the whole problem in the first place, it might have not been shimmed right or the gears themselves were made wrong.
I will keep everyone informed what the deal is and exactly what happened.

I agree. I've just had a bad premonition about my 4.10s due to the ordeal I went through in getting them lol. Cliff, if you noticed whining in the 5th and 6th gears you should have told them ASAP :(. These puppies aren't supposed to whine at all :nonod:

C5Noir, I don't have my engineering manual handy, but it would seem that shot-peening a surface would "cold forge" any tiny, incipient cracks closed, thus making the overall part stronger.
I worked in the bearing business, and we made bearings hard on the outside skin for wear resistance and left the inside softer for a more ductile and forgiving response to shock loads.

CJS, I read that same information too but I also found that there are MANY ways/versions to shotpeening and very close guidelines that must be followed for certain applications that all had their pros/cons. Maybe a HOS was never really installed?

Levi, I told them about the noise and they said that there is a one year warranty....basically telling me if they are not broke, like mine are, or not diagnosed by them, they can't take your word on it.

From a stock motor and that low launch ...that should have never broke. We still have guys out there with 4.10's with stock shaft and 450 + rwhp launching at 5000 rpm with et streets and not breaking. Hopefully you will be refunded. Keep us posted.

JMO,

If they see your post on here where you admit that you were drag racing using drag radials on your car, you can kiss any chance of them fixing the problem goodbye. I'd guess that maybe you never got the hardened output shafts in the first place. Good luck.

This is exactly why I went w/ the Getrag 3:73's even though the 3:90's would have been nice!

Cliff, I am really sorry to hear about this. Hopefully COH will stand behind their product, drag racing or not. I mean, they are not cruising gears they are made to race. Good luck and keep us informed.

Mike :)

Cliff

Sorry to see that happen to your car. Hopefully you'll be back at it in no time.

I video taped your "poof" run..but I hardly think you want to see it.

Are you currently running the stock shaft? I opted for the stock shaft cause I figured I did not have the 4K to drop for heads and Cam. When I do...I guess I can afford to pull the rear and upgrade the shaft...

Plus I have no intentions of using drag radials. I may show up at the track now and again. But not often

VetteRdstr:

Let me get this clear man, you broke your Getrag 3.73 rear end? :U When did this happen and if the Getrag 3.73s did break, i am really sorry to hear about that misfortune! What are you going to replace the 3.73s with?

Better luck to you,

Nitro

A clear point to identify hear, is that vetterdstr broke the shaft, which is not unheard of (the shaft simply isnt designed to launch on sticky tires at the strip), I have not heard of any internal breakage from racing with the factory built units, or any case failures.

I dont think its so much of a internal component issue, as it is an assembly issue. After talking at length in the past with Getrag USA's plant manager, noone has the millions of dollars of R&D, and expertise to build the unique C5 rear-end properly like getrag does. Some rebuilt units come out ok, some dont.

Nitro, the Left internal shaft broke over a year ago. No Hard replacements available at the time. Had to reinstall the OEM axle for repairs. The 3.73's went right back in.

Since then I refuse to use Drag Radials or Slicks to launch the car. If It breaks again, the hardened axle will be installed. :yesnod:

What is AA or COH going to do about this?
I thought we went though this same thing last time ....... Vendors don't warranty Race Cars, never have never will. I'm sorry to hear about your bad luck, but I don't think it's AA or COH's fault your race car broke. :smash:

sorry to hear of your misfortune. I've ran my 410 about 22 times w/o any problems at all. If this was your first run, maybe their was an install problem. How did you break it in?
