Default Corvette c5 differential adapter plate?

Hi everybody.

I´m wondering if their is an adapter plate to delete the torque tube on a c5 drivetrain. so it would work with a regular driveshaft? or if their is a adapter kit for a dana 44 differential to c5 suspension?

Don't know about an adapter plate, but the engine and trans-axle
are rigidly connected through the torque tube. If you remove it,
you will need to add mounts to stabilize each one, individually.

No, it would be a huge tear up to do that.

The Dana 44 is a totally different differential. The C5 Diff is mounted to the rear of the transmission and is specifically designed that way. To do a Dana 44 you would have to cast a new case that would have to be designed to install the 44 internals and you would need to machine an new differential input shaft that was compatible with the existing transmission.

I realize that the C5 transmission isn't all that robust. It was designed for, as a worst case, about 400 foot pounds of torque plus the shock loads of the stock engine. It's fine for that, but if you want more strength there are plenty of shops that will install the innards of a C6 Z06 diff and that is a lot more robust. After that you can go with the external bracing kits and handle pretty much whatever power you can make.

Bottom line is that the transmission and diff are a package in the C5 and to try to totally rework them is going to be a lot more work than it is to just upgrade to C6 internals. I've always loved the 44, I had them in my C4 and they were bullet proof, but those days are gone.

Also consider the tube as structure.

Long ago, when Lotus was still designed by one genius guy, they had on display at the auto show, the final evolution of the car frame, a central tube with all the other stuff hanging off of it. ( this was back in the sixties) A big stiff structural tube in the middle of the car is a good idea.

maybe i explained me a little complicated. i mean if their is a adapter kit to use the whole dana 44 diff to a c5 / c6 suspension. or if i need to make a custom fittings instead? of if their as a adapter plate to ditch the torque tube and use a regular tranny mounted directly on the engine?

Bah!

Some guys have no imagination...

Certainly it can be done. In fact, it has been done. All it takes is money.

You would have to have a plate machined to bolt to the front of the diff and install a custom made yoke as well. It really shouldn't be to hard to engineer. Any good fabrication shop should be able to work with you to come up with a design.

You'd also need to make a better mounting system for the diff.

A forward mounted transmission will not fit in the stock tunnel, so you'd need to modify it as well.

And fabricate a transmission mount. That would probably be the easiest part of the project.

So, now the question is, why you want to use a Dana 44? Why not use a 12 bolt center section and fabricate some output shafts for the axles?

If you're gonna go that far, why not install the Moser 12 bolt solid axle conversion?

Regardless, good luck with your project!

As you said maybe. Anything would work with money haha. Maybe a dumb question. If imgoing to dothis project, im gonna use a t56 6 speed tranny. But i have seen many projexts on thirdgen.org that have put in lsx/t56 combo and seems to wprk fine with the stock tunnel? Or is it because its a another angle tan the orginal setup maybr? Just a thought

If you throw money and imagination into the deal, cars can fly. I once saw a guy with a 32 roadster who had his motor in the passenger seat.
The poster could put all his problem s in the passenger wells and use chain drives as some high powered exotic production cars have done with transverse mounted engines.

What vehicle are you looking to install this system in?

Are you trying to convert a different body style to IRS?

The T56 bolted to the back of the engine will work in many applications, but not in the C5/C6 without modifying the tunnel to make room for it.

Why not do a TR6060/C6 Z06 conversion? The TR6060 has the exact same external dimensions as the T56 and using the C6 Z06 diff there is no custom machining/adapters, etc. The TR6060 handles MUCH more torque and the C6 Z06 diff does as well.

OH.... Well that makes a difference... Lol.

I would think making a Dana 44 from a C4 work would be easier than a C5/C6 diff. Simply because it already has the flanges for the axles.

You'll have to fabricate mounting points for the upper/lower control arms and the upper shock mount.
I'm sure it wouldn't take much to fab some brackets to place the Dana rear in place. I wouldn't waste my time trying to install the rear cradle from the C5/C6. Since you're going to have to fab quite a bit of stuff, you may as well fab all the control arm mounts too. Take a lot of measurements from a C5 to ensure you get the geometry correct.

I'd love to see the progress of this project. If you decide to go down this road, be sure to give us a link to your build thread.

I presume you've been on Hawks 3rd gen site as well as others? You might get some good ideas from Yellowbullet too. In their GM build section.

Good luck with it.

im gonna let you for sure if i´m going further with this. do you know if their are any difference between a dana 44 from a corvette and a dana 44 from a viper except the housing with the "ears" in front for mounting? if the internals are the same? what is the housing made of`cast iron, aluminium etc? what more sites can you recommend than hawks?

IIRC I saw that done on thirdgen.org before.
I also know the LS/T56 solid rear axle swap is popular in the 3rdgen cars.
I race with a guy that even fabed up an adapter to mount a 350 directly to a C5 auto/diff combo and then put it in a Corvair.

I have no idea if the viper rear is the same as the C4. To the best of my knowledge, the C4 rear is an aluminum case. I presume the Viper one would be too.

Good then it's possible to weld on "ears" in the font of the housing. IF it doesn't manifactured an adapter kit that fits a c5 diff.
