Default How To Route Transmission Cooler Lines

I'm wanting to install a trans cooler but need some advice on exactly how to run the new hoses from the trans lines to the new cooler. I am wanting to bypass the radiator.

Here is a pic of the transmission lines. One line goes to the top of the radiator, I assume this is the return line. The line going to the bottom of radiator is the flow from the transmission to the cooler, correct? How exactly do I splice in the new hoses to run them to the cooler? Do I cut the existing rubber hose and use double ended barbed fittings with clamps to to extend the lines to the new cooler?

Any help is appreciated.

I just unscrewed the fitting out of the radiator and used a inverted flare to barbed fitting. That way you don't have to cut anything.

You have your cooler inline with the radiator? If so what temps does your trans uaully run? I have some fittings to do it that way. I'm debating whether or not to bypass the rad and run the cooler alone. My concern is running too cool for winter months although we dont get really really cold weather where I live.

Yea I had it ran in line with the radiator. I never really looked to see what the temps were in the winter as I don't drive it very much in the winter. During the summer it would run around 180-190. I switched to a 6 speed back in October but I was running a 3000 stall converter when it was automatic.

I hate to be the one to say it, But with all the debris in that photo I can see temps getting high. You may want to invest in a radiator genie http://www.radiatorgenie.com/Radiato...e_p/rg1001.htm They work great.

Yea I do have to clean it out regularly but temps never get hot. That was an old picture that was taken before cleaning everything out and I was in the process of removing all the auto stuff during the 6 speed conversation.

Back in the day when I was young... I was taught to treat an add-on tranny cooler just as that; supplementary. Always run through the factory cooler then the adder. Haven't had an auto for about 20 years, so take this with a grain of salt.

Well I did some more searching and reading through some old post and it seems either way will work fine. I just want to keep temps below 200 during the summer months so as long as thats happening I would be happy.

Thanks for all the help guys!

I just sent you a pm on the fitting size but it's 5/8-18 inverted flare to 3/8 barb fitting.

Keep in mind that GM CHANGED the trans fluid line fittings design and sizes in 2001.
So a 5/8-18 inverted flare likely will not mate up to a 01-04 Auto Trans radiator fitting.
This also impacts any replacement radiators for AT C5s.

i have a 2004 and it’s pretty big male fitting think it came off with 19mm wrench. What are the thread sizes that go into radiator on the transmission line.
