So last night my power steering pump pulley grenaded and took out the belt and reservoir with it. Something looks off to where I thought I just needed another pulley, but I see gear teeth on the pump itself, do I need a new pump or do I need to remove the teeth "they were pat or the pulley". At a lost. From a 97 Corvette with 75k miles
I wrestled with this one last year. This was my experience - YMMV as several here have had no trouble getting this thing off. The PS pulley is molded over that gear-toothed hub which is pressed on to the PS pump shaft. In the process of trying to get my flip drive installed, I attempted to remove the PS pulley using the standard PS pulley puller so I could upgrade to the C6 steel version.
Innocent enough, right? Should just pop right off.
Nope. Thing gave me fits all afternoon breaking the little lip on the pulley that the puller grabs onto. I must have tried 5 different pullers before finally drilling three holes to use a three-arm puller with screws and bolts through the body of the pulley. Here was the result of that effort.
The pulley is made sort of bakelite material that cracked pretty easily. It's molded onto a double-toothed hub that is pressed onto the pump shaft. I thought the pulley was aluminum until I heated with my torch to try and expand it from the shaft and a funny smell emanated from it. Even with this totally shattered and the pump apart, that hub would not separate from the shaft. I took it to work thinking I could use one of the presses there to press the shaft out of the hub.
This is what it came down to - presses did not help, at least with my shaft/hub.
Success!
Here's the C6 version that I wanted to replace it with.
Back together finally. I actually ordered a new bearing because I wasn't comfortable with all the abuse the original bearing might have seen in the shop trying to get that hub off. I installed it on the shaft, pushed the shaft back in the pump and secured it with the snap ring and finally pressed the new pulley onto the shaft. The new assembly is smooth as butter.

the piece you see on the pump shaft is the center of your pulley, you need to figure out a way to remove it... it would probably be easier to just take the pump off the car and do the repair on a bench... I also highly suggest the c6 pulley like patches mentioned that way this won't happen again

A puller wouldn't work to remove the teeth gears? How did you get it off, the stuff at your job ?

Wouldn't have thought the pulley would have come apart like that and then be so hard to repair. Thanks to Patches and neutron82 for the pics and comments.

I saw one explode on a dyno once and took out the radiator and messed up a bunch of stuff, I didn't know they were composite until that happened and I immediately looked into replacing mine... it is more common on supercharged cars due to the added belt tension but it can still happen to any car... the new pulley is around $20 and you shouldn't need a new belt, on a supercharged car it is definitely worth the swap for the peace of mind in my opinion... as far as the op's situation, a power steering pulley puller won't take off the hub internals because the jaws of the pulley will not have anything to grab onto... I would take the pump off, put it in a vice, and use a dremel or cutoff wheel to carefully cut it in half being very very careful not to cut into the pump shaft

The ring the puller hooks onto is still there. Before attempting to remove it the hard way, try putting using a standard power steering pulley puller onto that remaining hub and see if it will come off.

you're right it is still there, I was looking at patches' pic with the lip broken off and not the op's pic... try a puller first and if that lip breaks off then you can try the other method I suggested
Having just enjoyed this replacement experience while installing my blower, I suggest the following..... Put the entire accessory bracket, pull the teeth off your pump, replace with ls2 pulley, install pump and hold down piece along with tube to reservoir onto the accessory bracket while keeping accessory bolts loose under the Ps pulley, squeeze the assembly into place, take your time getting the accessory bracket mounting bolts socked in loosely, finish all bolts, then re tighten. Good luck.

Puller worked like a charm. When the pulley broke it destoryed the belt and reservoir as well. So right now I'm waiting on the pulley to come in.
Just went through this myself, I used a Dake press at work and still managed to shatter the pulley.
You may want to also consider replacing the PS pump altogether (I used an autozone special) and the bracket to a newer version (you can get them new or used at vettenuts)- which is stronger. Particularly if you are going to supercharge.
I have a extra LS2 PS pulley if you want it you can have it. Im in Ft Worth, so if you are ever close to me or I can ship it if you want to pay for shipping.
