I am fairly certain that my driver's side headlight motor needs to be replaced; I have done some searches and the majority of the symptoms seem to point that way.
The one thing the lights are doing that I have not seen mentioned in any of the other threads I have seen is that now the headlights pop open even when I just turn on the parking lamps. I used to be able to turn them on without the lights popping up; now that this one motor is making a grinding noise when I close the headlights, this has started. Is that something that can be caused by the bad headlight motor gear or is it an indication of some other problem?
Thank you; I ordered the brass replacement gear kit from Rodney Dickman and hope that it fixes the problem. I am confident it will fix the grinding noise but, have to wait and see if it addresses the issue with the headlights popping up when I turn on the parking lamps.
Did you check your rubber bump stops (4 per headlight)? I'm not sure they are playing a part in your problem because you said it only happens when you turn on the parking lights, but if you're going there you may as well check them just in case

This happens when the gears fail. The exact same thing happened to me when my driver side headlight gear failed. Replaced it with the brass gears from Rodney Dickman and everything went back to normal. My headlights no longer come up with parking lamps only. Hope this helps.
