Default Problem After Installing Shift Control Cable A4

My shift control cable broke on my 2003 A4. My mechanic installed a new GM cable and now when the car is in 4th or "D" the shifter on the console shows that I'm in "N". Park and reverse seem to be correct.

It is really weird...When I put it in 1st and go to 2nd the car will not shift until I move the shifter into 3rd (it's really now in 2nd gear) then I shift into D (it's really in 3rd) and move it into N and then I get 4th gear. He is telling me there is no adjustment and there is nothing he can do. Before the old shift cable broke I never had any problems.

He said that he took the old cable to the GM parts dealer and they matched it up and came up with part number 10352529. When I look up the part number it states for 2003-2005 models, so I think it is the correct part.

Any ideas?

There is an adjustment you can do yourself with a screwdriver. There is a plastic locking tab, you push it out and adjust the cable.

Yep, hopefully it's just off a little. Maybe try putting the trans in 1 and shifter in 1 and reset it there.

It is supposed to be adjusted and set with both the transmission and shift lever in neutral per the 99 service manual.

Look for instructions online concerning adjusting the "PRNDL" switch on a 4l60 trans

Once you unlock the cable from the shift lever, do you turn the end of the cable one way or the other? and should the lever and shifter both be in neutral?

Thanks Dan

Perhaps this diagram may be of help:
