I wonder if something hit it there, or this is just a result of not jacking in properly. I have always used a block to span the ribs, but if you only put the jack on one rib and it shifted slightly could this be the result?
My best guess is that something hit it. The way that is is broken off (towards the rear) is consistent with hitting something at speed. From a structural standpoint, I'm sure the individual ribs have sufficient strength to hold the weight of the car as a vertical load on that member, but if a moment is generated by the change in angle of the rib relative to the vertical as the car is raised, there may be failure. I very seriously doubt the previous owner tried to jack the car up from the cradle, as the car is lowered as far as it will go. You'd need a crazy kind of low-profile jack to get under there.
I've read elsewhere about people hitting chunks of concrete and road debris resulting in identical damage. However, there is not much commentary regarding if the cradle should be replaced, or how to do it. So far, all my questions have been answered! Now I am just waiting on the new cradle.

The scarring up front on the leading edge also makes me think this.
If it hit a large enough chunk of concrete (for example) while traveling "at speed" it's very possible the car was lifted up in the air briefly enough to pass over the object before coming back down, OR possibly the object shattered to pieces upon impact and the remainder of the undercarriage passed over the smaller pieces.
Either way, that was a hell of an impact.
