Default Next Question, if I get a ring job...

I assume they'll need to disassemble the motor almost entirely. Good time for a cam, no? I notice that Chevy offers the LS6 cam for about $297. If I have that installed in the stock LS1 engine (2001 w/LS6 manifold I think), would I get a noticeable improvement in performance, or would I need the LS6 heads too?

You would be insane to put another stock cam in the car, man--- You'd be lucky to get a 10-15 RWHP--which you'd barely...if at all, notice SOTP!!!
There are plenty of perfectly smooth-idling, emissions-passing, no-reprogramming-necessary cams available that will net you a hell of a lot better power increase than a puny LS6 stocker.---
Remember--it's STILL a stock cam, tuned with 60 year old men going to the golf course in mind....don't **** away a golden opportunity to get something in there worth having!!

EASY NOW!!! I'm new to the LS1 and still learning. Apparently, from the post above, it's not really an option anyway, without changes to the rest of the valve train, which I'm hoping to avoid.

you could probably add the '01 without an issue but it isn't worth it. spend the money on an aftermarket cam imho. i research this before i went out and just bought a Z06 cause i had an oil burner too. but add to your list on my opinion only if you are going to do a cam...

Pushrods
Spring
Valve Retainers

and i recommended the comp cam 212/218 or mti 218/218 if you want to spend some extra $$$ on this don't know you budget. hope this helps feel free to email if you any additional questions.

I just had my rings changed, and I'm virtually certain they did not remove the cam. The top comes off (i.e., intake, injectors, and heads), then the oil pan, then the rod caps, and then each piston is pushed upward and done one at a time and put back in; so, I'm fairly sure the cam is not touched.

So, the bigger question becomes, now that you'll be paying the big bucks for mods, how big a cam do you really want? :jester

SteveL2,

How much oil were you using before the ring job? I'm wondering how much I've got to be using before GM will make it right?

I think the range has changed over time as to what GM thinks is acceptable without doing the new rings. If you search around, you likely can find the TSB on this; I think, but am not sure, that they say if you use more than 1 quart per 2k miles than you are entitled to the new rings (1 ring per piston, the other stock ones are left alone).

My car was somewhat erratic in its usage over its first 17k miles, but I definitely saw the low oil indicator several times, and my chrome exhaust tips were always black. The dealer had me come in and get a new PCV valve (also per the TSB), and at the same time they topped my oil off and said to come back at 1,000 miles. I drove fairly aggressively during that period, and I ended up using close to 2 quarts in that 1,000 miles.

After the ring job, I cleaned my exhaust tips, and about 700 miles later so far they are much cleaner. So, I'm assuming there's been a considerable improvement, and this after my car had some good spirited driving last week.

Good luck.

It is up to the dealer how they change the rings. My dealer pulls the motor, he has done 4 vette ring jobs so far this year.
This dealer is willing to put in a cam and other speed parts that I bring him, he will only charge me the "extra" labor it takes to do these things with the motor out, which is very minimal.
See my sig for what I'm having done.

I believe that this info will answer your question concerning what rate of consumption will qualify for the new piston ring.

The article is fairly thorough, but in my opinion, not thoroughly fair. :D Even though my rings have been replaced and even though it appears my problem has been reduced if not eliminated (too soon to tell), I guess I'm just sensitive for pinhead comments like this from the article:

"While it’s clear to us General Motors erred in not making high-rpm/light-load testing as prominent as it should have been, thus, failing to detect trouble with ring-flutter; this issue does beg the question: should a small group of owners who subject their engines to the unusual duty-cycle of sustained high-rpm/light-load operation share part of the responsibility for this problem?
As far as I'm concerned, this is nothing but big business advised by word polishing attorneys and business folks. Legal advice 101 (I know, I've lived it) -- never admit you're wrong, and if there's any admission, still blame the other guy. In a purely unscientific sample size of one, me, my car is my daily driver which primarily sees miles taking my daughter to and from school, on DFW highways. I can assure you that during the ovewhelming majority of those miles it saw second gear no more than the other 5 gears, and certainly not the majority of time as the article suggests. At the same time, I can also assure you that when I did use second gear more often, the already-existing GM-installed problem worsened. :nopity

Bottom line, they seem to have done right with my car; it's just too bad they also couldn't do right with their customer relations. If I didn' love the styling and performance of this stinkin' car so much, I'd go elsewhere for my next purchase. :cuss
