I've checked out all the tech stuff on how to install these, but still have a couple of questions.
1 - I'm a little confused as to how high I have to get the monster to get the old exhaust off in one piece. I have a jack that will lift the body to about 30 inches (an AC DK13HLQ), with Jack Stands, is this high enough?
2 - Sounds like you don't really remove the rear sway bar, just the four bolts that hold it to bushings and then let the bar hang, is that right?
3 - I've got the speedway tips, I can't imagine there is too much lining up to do with these, but any thoughts?
4 - There didn't seem to be a gasket included to attach between the new pipes and the H pipes. I didn't take the package apart, but I'd imagine you need a gasket here, is that correct?
5 - Finally, should I just take this to somebody to do it? I don't mind doing a bit of wrenching, but Mean Green's got me thinking about being under a car on jack stands here in So Cal. Actually, I'm a little lazy and seems like a bit of a pain.
When I had my PRT's installed I just ran the car down to Tuffy's. Cost me about $80.00. It took me a little bit of my time, but a lot easier than trying to craw underneath the car if you only have jack stands. If you had a four lift post that would be a completely different story.
I had printed out pictures from a C5 Registry member on installing an exhaust system and gave it to the tech before hand. The whole process took about a half hour. Probably would have been done quicker but the guy didn't believe me when I told him the sway bar does have to be loosened and swung out of the way. I went in first thing in the morning and stood right there and watch their every mood. They wanted me to leave the car for a day so they could "work" on it. Fat Chance!
Again, not a difficult or long job for changing the exhaust if you can get the car in the air. For me there was no choice but to take it to a shop.
By the way they did do a good job so I sent a pizza over afterward.
Remember the factory muffler all one piece back to the straight sections . You will have to pull those around your axles so might want it up in the air on a lift to make it easier . :smash:
Just did my 6 speed. If yo get the car so the center of the spring is 24" from the ground the pipes will snake out.I put the front wheels on 2 x 4"s an blocks under the rear wheels until the springs were 24" off the ground. I believe the tires were about 14" off ground. This only works for 6 speed. The old gaskets are ok to reuse. You will need 18mm socket,15mm wrench,13mm socket.Tourque specks are 70 ft lbs on nut and 49 ft lbs on bolt when reinstalling the bar.
1 - 36"
2 - Yes( See pics)
3 - Just a little, take your time & look close & from 20' behind as you tighten up the clamps.
4 - Yes
5 - It's all reletaive, 1-3 hours time. I looked and checked a lot of parts undernearth for torque, leaks etc. Its a good way for you to get to know your car!
I used My lift at the house & just jacked up the rear only. As stated before, you need to raise it a min. of 36" to get off the stock system in one pc. with ease. Tape measure confirmed it. If you don't mind cutting, 24" should work fine. A safe height for a floor jack/ blocking setup. 36" w/o a lift is pushing the saftey envelope IMHO. Removal was really no problem. I took off both sides in one piece. Dropped the sway bar down(18mm & 15mm socket). Dropped both rear muffler holder brackets off(1/2 " socket). I did have to take off the Pass side heat shield(1/2" socket & 10MM socket)to take down that side with ease. Only took 3 min. Walla, in 25min, old exhaust is on the ground. 22 1/2 lbs. each side. Install was easy as well. The system looked good and fit good as well. You just have to take your time to line up the tips & not go by the instructions for Sway bar tightening. Not 50 ft lbs. but 49 top & 70 on the bottom. I am going out now to check the clamps for tightness. Cranked them down to about 55 ft.lbs!!! They didn't move.

Where do you do the 36" measurement - floor to bottom of rear panel? The bottom of the rear panel is approx 14" off the ground normally, so are you actually saying the car has to be raised 22" ??

ON THE ALIGNMENT OF THE SPEEDWAY TIPS IT IS BEST TO HAVE THEM TACK WELDED AT THE CLAMP. TIP IS SO LARGE IF ITS OFF ALITTLE IS VERY NOTICEABLE. YOU MIGHT ALSO WANT TO INSTALL A WIRE SCREEN INSIDE THE TIP, ITS A VERY LARGE OPENING AND IT NEEDS THE SCREEN. I DID THIS TO MINE AND ALL I GET ARE COMPLIMENTS.
