Yes, you have to pull it all out, or at least slide it back out of the way. Not really that difficult and no special tools either. replace all you can while you have it out; the slave and throw out bearing with remote bleeder, torque tube couplers and bearings, diff seals and diff mount.

My heavens!!!!!!!!!!!!! Way over my skill set!!!!!!!!!
Car Rookie is right, but please don’t use cinder blocks with jack stands on top of them...
The task certainly looks daunting but it’s really not bad. If you don’t have an adequate set of tools/mechanical skill set, you’ll end up paying quite a bit of money to have a shop do it, unfortunately. It’s not difficult work, but it takes a lot of labor hours to get it done. Good luck!
There is at least 2 really good DIYs out there in internet land that will walk you through the process.

IMHO, if you own a C5 you should be able to do most the mechanical work. If you don't the costs of an older car and especially a 'vette will eat you alive, besides nothing better than a perfectly running 'vette and you did it.
If you have any mechanical experience this job is "really not that bad." Biggest problems the weight of everything and the bell housing bolts the rest is straight forward. If you get stuck or you don't know what to do ask here on the forum. It helped me out a lot when doing my clutch. Worst case, you can't DIY, then have it towed and its not that much more in the scheme of things. If you're a novice mechanic (like me) take lots of pictures (cell phone is perfect) and you'll know how to put it together again.
Finally, one place you don't want to skimp, get a torque wrench if you don't have one.

I left the front wheels on and had them on race ramp blocks. I felt it was way safer and more stable than having the jack stands fully extended like yours. to each their own we both got it done and survived. the only thing I would change for next time is to put 2x6 on top of the cinder blocks to distribute the weight better. The job itself is really straight forward and only really uses basic metric hand tools. I took mine out in pieces took out the rear suspension with the diff and trans, then the torque tube. And put back together one piece at a time; torque tube, trans, diff, rear cradle, and then rear suspension as I replaced the rear suspension with one that I had powder coated and replaced ball joints and bushings.
Just came here b/c Will Scott is helping me with alignment. and I gotta say Hory Chit! That is impressive. and the clutch replacement how do is called Dope something. I think the guy was beign too modest If anybodty needs it, here 'tiz: http://www.corvetteflorida.com/pdf/c...ch_install.pdf I just opened it and it works fine. the one on the CF is file 404
