I've done it this way: Pack the pilot hole full of wheel bearing grease, forcing it in behind the bearing if there is a void there....then get a short piece of wooden dowel and insert into the pilot hole. Rap the end of the dowel with a hammer. The grease being incompressable, will force the bearing out of the crank.
I've heard some guys say that wet tissue packed in there will work...never tried that, but I know the grease method works....been there, done that, but not on a vette crank. Anyone know why this won't work in Phil's situation?
Do not do what MDT said with a LS1 crankshaft. There is a freeze plug located directly behind the pilot bearing. If you use the "greese" trick, you will end up forcing the freeze plug out into the oil pan.
To do the job correctly, you will need to buy/rent a puller. Autozone or your local parts store should have one.
