Having an A4 with 2.73's with exhaust and airbox mods, can I change gearing to 3.73 or is that overkill vs 3.42's being enough. Will be reprogramming after change?
You will definately be reprogramming! As far as the question about the 3.73's there are quite a few that have done that. I'm certain that you will get mixed feedback on that. Personaly, i'm going to step up to 3.42's and i'll be happy!
Certainly. Higher gear ratios are easier on the transmission. They are tougher on all the stuff on the output side of the rear end.
ding... ding... ding... we have a winner!
IMO, if you go to the 3.73; the dollars spent won't end there. You'll need to spend some money to regain traction or all you'll do is smoke the OEM tires.
And going from the 2.73 to any other ratio (even just the 3.15) will require programing. It's too great a change for the stock program to handle.
I went from 2.73's to 342's, it was great, but the 3.73's are even better with the tq conv. Since I drive moderately on the street, traction is not a problem. Can't wait for cooler weather and some track action! Can we smell 12.0-12.09, I think so.
I love my 3.73s. Tim is correct that you will want to think about tire also. I like the runflats (Yokohama AVS Sports) and have no problems on the street but they certainly suck for the track. They're not impossible to launch on, I've gotten an 1.868 out of them, but you can't really be consistent on them. I used to be able to count on 2.0x all the time in stock trim but now I'm all over the map again.
I did the 3.42, and that is cool for me because I drive it every day. If you can stand the roar, those 3.73s would rock! I'd love to have done it.
I am a daily driver as well. It's not as much of a noise increase at highway speeds as you might think. (I thought I would be driving slower with these gears, but I actually find myself driving faster. ) OTOH, I am sometimes annoyed by the increased revs at low speeds due to the high-ish converter stall and the lower gear actually helps with that. It's more noticeable at low speeds with a louder exhaust. A little tweaking with programming to lower upshift speeds can help out too.
